ANY HOPE FOR A COUNTRY STATION ON REGULAR FM IN THE NY MARKET????

I'm sure it's possible because there is a surprisingly high number of country music lovers in this country, but I wouldn't count on it any time soon.

Very unlikely. As has been said again and again, country has not been a ratings success anywhere in the NYC area (including suburbs) in a while. Perhaps you could stock up on an HD radio, there's country on 103.5 HD2 and the signal surely reaches Midwood.

Let's beat this dead horse a little more....with the popularity of Country music now, I think an NYC country station would do well. I do think that at the time the last country station here flipped, the music wasn't as popular. Witness the airplay that some of the crossover country tunes get. Maybe the owners are just as happy that we have what we have now here in NYC; the reality is nobody has the stones to try it and spend the $$$s to get iit off the ground...

Discussion???

590 buddy ;D

There is still the perception that country music appeals to people with little buying power. This is being said very euphemistically. I think it would pick up decent ratings in the suburbs, but NJ stations like WMTR and WCTC that made changes recently didn't consider it. I would say don't hold your breath. Get an HD radio for 103.5 HD2 or XM-Sirius.

Granted, maybe doing what I did for dance music seemed like a "crazy" idea. I've certainly taken my share of laughs and haters on this. But things got done.

Just saying...maybe it's time all of you country fans start seeking each other out and collectively do something??

Well....stranger things have happened in NYC radio in recent years.... ;) ALL I can say is that if the country community can now band together much as the oldies (OK, greatest hits ;)) community did back in 2005, you never, ever know....

I think there's a chance that NYC could see Country on the FM dial sometime in the not-too-distant future.

After all, doesn't Cumulus have a CP to move 103.9 WFAS closer?

Also, Cox's 96.7 WCTZ has a CP to move much closer.

I also suspect WRXP will be hard pressed for long-term survival.

Like I said, stranger things have happened in NYC radio in recent years ;) - HOWEVER...

1) That's TRUE about 103.9 - BUT...what's the guarantee that even if WFAS DOES move closer to NYC, that they're going to change their format to country? They are an A/C station that does some nice numbers up where they are....

2) Isn't WCTZ 96.7 supposed to be like some kind of cousin of "Jack" or something? And what kind of numbers are they pulling in as a "Jack" cousin?? I'm not sure that I would see that happening for this station.....

3) Now WRXP, on the OTHER hand, is probably the ONLY candidate for a format change to country - HOWEVER, I have to think that they want to give it a shot (I don't know why....) of this strange rock-classic rock-new rock mix...but in SIX months....can you say "The NEW Country 101.9"?? Hmmm... 8)

I don't see why RXP could've sign on as a country station in the first place. There was no need for another K-Rock or Q.

103.9 has a CP to build on the new WFUV tower in the Bronx. It would not surprise me to see this stick sold by Cumulus to an owner who puts a non-English format on there. The signal will only cover the immediate metro at best, and the multipath and overload from the ESB will have the signal bouncing all over the place in Manhattan.

96.7 has plans to move to a site on the north shore of LI near Syosset. Signal in Nassau and Queens should be OK, but probably won't do as well as 92.7. Maybe Cox will run it as a LI station alongside 'BLI and 'BAB. Could do well as country, but will not provide anything close to full market coverage. Country seems to do better in the suburbs anyway...

'RXP is an unknown quantity at this point. Today, Emmis seems committed to it, but there does not seem to be any momentum going for it. There was a rumor that Emmis was interested in selling it a while back, but the market is probably not all that good right now. I don't know why they would not try a CHR...Z-100 has that space to itself and is doing very well...demos are probably better for CHR than country.

I hope some day NY will get a country home.I understand life with out a local country FM station. We in the New Haven CT area went with a 10 year drought from 1978 when WIOF 104.1 Waterbury signed off country and went to a Magic 104 format.10 years later in 1988 WWYZ 92.5 Waterbury with an easylistening format to New Country 92.5.
during the drought I tuned in 1050 WHN,97.1,103.5 WYNY,WKHK 106.7,all from the big apple.and WWVA,WSM. and 2 short lived am's here in connecticut which was WSCR 1220 and WNTY 990.Please correct me on the data.if wrong.Ok again WHN was the best country station on the air, awesome
format excellent mix of songs of different country tastes.they played old tunes mixed with the current tunes at the time.Thank you ED for the awesome format.

Question ? how long has it been NYC with out a country home.

In New York City proper, country's been off the air since February 1996 when 103.5 WYNY signed off the country format & converted to 103.5 WKTU with (more or less) their current dance format. (Over the past year or so the country format has returned to New York City - sort of - on the HD2 channel of the 103.5 frequency. It's Clear Channel's nationwide country music channel.)
Also, from December 1996 to May 2002, there was the quadrocast of country stations on 4 suburban Class A FM's @ 107.1 collectively known as "New Country Y-107". This consisted of WWXY/later WYNY in Briarcliff Manor/Westchester County, NY; WWZY Long Branch, NJ; WWVY/later WWXY Hampton Bays, NY & WRNJ/later WWYY Belvidere, NJ (Lehigh Valley). These stations were owned by Big City Radio. These became Spanish contemporary hits stations under the moniker "Rumba 107.1" in 2002.

Please stop repeating about having Country music station in NYC and it's not gonna happen and I've had enough with this like 10 or 15 times and I can't take it anymore and please lock this thread!!! OK!

So every best of 3 rock station genre are include:

92.3 K-Rock by playing Rock
101.9 RXP by playing Adult Rock
and Q104.3 by playing Classic Rock

50 kilowatt 100.7 - WHUD could probably pickup more listeners and reach NYC if they switched to a country format. Country has the same problems in the region as rock stations do and would likely benefit from adding familiar songs from the 70s and 80s as well as new country in order to gain a wider audience.

They may do well in the Hudson valley now but they have allot of competition from NYC stations. But being the sole country station in the region could change all that.

That's a pretty ludicrous idea. They're doing great with what they have now. They would *not* see the same ratings as a country station, and their signal doesn't make it well enough into NYC to cause much of a dent. Besides, it's pretty well known that country, if anything, is a suburban format (and all those recent attempts have failed too).
