Any idea what the "Big Announcement" is on WHTQ friday at 5pm?

The consultants have spoken. 96 Minutes of commercial free music at 5:00PM (we'll see how long that lasts)...

Also, according to their website, "commercial-free weekends... starting this weekend." Guarantee that won't last long, either.

And here's something interesting: the new 96rockorlando.com domain appears to be blank, yet when you go to whtq.com, you get a blurb about the new "96 Rock," except there is still the insignia of the old WHTQ identity on the top of every page.

Basically, they have added all the songs from JRR that make me switch to WHTQ. I was in high school and college in the 90s and really don't want to hear Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, or 90s Metallica ever again. When those overplayed artists come on WJRR I flip to WHTQ, or any of the urban stations. I'm hoping that WJRR tweaks its playlist some. I'd love to hear some of the newer artists they play at 4am during the other dayparts (Black Keys, Phoenix, Mumford & Sons). I might be in my late 30s but I'd rather hear the stuff 15 year olds are listening to these days (screamo and Lil Wayne).

Sounds like a clone of Tampa's (well, technically Sarasota's) WHPT, which did see an initial bump in the ratings with the 90's adds. Here it was an obvious play for Clear Channel Active Rock WXTB's older listeners. The bump receded, though, once the listeners heard "Jeremy" for the umpteenth time IMHO. Look for the typical Cox short playlist to continue, most likely you'll hear "Plush" as many times as you heard "Rock You Like A Hurricane" (and often back to back).

I thought it odd at first, since many of the 90's titles are also played at Cox Modern Rock sister station 97X WSUN (a station that does play Mumford & Sons, Black Keys and Phoenix in all dayparts). The bulk of 97X's playlist is current rock, so the overlap is slight.

Cox does seem to love cloning their Tampa stations lately:

Jacksonville's WXXJ Clone of WSUN 97X
Miami's Easy 93.1 Clone of WDUV The Dove
Orlando's WHTQ Clone of WHPT 102.5 The Bone

In other words it was just as I thought - a little music tweak and a moniker change and nothing more. This is hardly a "Big" change and certainly nothing major; However, it may be enough to garner slightly better ratings and overall ad revenues.

I will further expound by saying the music additions and rotation, so far, sounds good; while the new logo creates a much need refreshing new image. Essentially WHTQ is attempting to lower its target demo by adding the newer music, and rightfully so in keeping with the trends. The new cosmetic "facelift" may actually do well for the New 96 Rock.

Now, with all that said, and their new TV commercial aside, perhaps utilizing an all live talented air-staff would most likely be asking too-much and totally out of the question!

Now, here's something interesting... 96rockorlando.com is still a blank page, yet whtq.com is still active with the new "96 Rock" logo - though every page has the old WHTQ logo on them...
