Any of you have those July 6, 2004 loggings?

I was just wondering, if you guys have any loggings from the biggest E-skip opening of the decade: July 6, 2004? I' don't, but I agree with you, it was crazy. If I was going to DX that day, I probably wouldn't have gotten a local at all! Maybe 3 stations on every frequency, like bleeding from a 100 kw FM 10 miles away. Do you have any loggings on FM or TV from July 6, 2004? I would love to see it.

Crain,

7/6/04 was an EPIC Es day in Michigan as well. It started out for me with 628 mile short-skip on WRNS 95.1 from North Carolina around 11:00 AM. As the morning progressed, I logged now-perennial frequent flier skip stations from Tampa-St. Petersburg, FL before it dipped below the FM band around 1:00 that afternoon.

The Es returned with a vengeance in the early evening hours with some of the shortest skip I've ever witnessed in my area. I logged 475 mile distant Baltimore, MD stations. I've only heard one station closer than that via Es, but that opening wasn't nearly as epic as this one. After hearing a few more from Maryland and Massachusetts, I had to shut the radio off and get to my Dad's 50th birthday party. Nothing gets between me and family!

After the birthday party ended around 9:00, I headed back to the radio to find the Es STILL going on. I managed to log a few more from New Orleans before it finally ended for good. I then went to the message boards to read if anyone else had logged anything and that's when I found out I missed a historic Es opening.

I logged 23 new ones to bring my then total to 565 stations (currently at 1,295). It's scary to think about how many I COULD have heard on this day, but I don't regret missing them. Those stations will always be there.

What a great DX day that was... it just wouldn't quit! Here is my log for that day, and this is just the new loggings... it does not include those I'd heard previously and of course the many many unID's that were lost in the interference.

The first number after the state is the mileage, and the second number is the azimuth. All this DX was done on a Boston Accoustics Recepter radio. It was quite sensitive, but poor adjacent channel selectivity. DX location is Poughkeepsie, NY.

The great opening of July 29, 2009 wasn't quite as crazy, but signals were coming in from more directions: from South Carolina to South Dakota, from Florida, to Arkansas to Wisconsin!

I'm a ham, and thus, wasn't on FM broadcast. But...

I caught wind of the opening on the way home from my son's karate class late afternoon. The 6m FM call channel (52.525) was awash with signals -- always a good sign. When I arrived home, 144.200 was full of hams from the New England area. It was on.

Over the next couple of hours, MUF never dropped below 2 meters. I even worked several stations on 2m FM, some of them just guys with 50W mobiles on the way home. It was freakin' crazy. MUF, I understand, got well above 200 MHz. Some lucky TV DXers even IDed stations as high as channel 13 (WLOX/Biloxi was seen in New England, if memory serves).

I think I worked 70 or more 2m stations that day (my log isn't at my fingertips). I can't imagine ever doing that kind of volume again. The editor of QST Magazine called July 6, 2004 the biggest VHF opening ever seen in North America (interestingly, I worked him on 2m during the opening -- Memphis to Maryland).

I think I remember this opening. I was in North Myrtle Beach, and I remember picking up stations from TX and OK (like KBEZ Tulsa, KWEN Tulsa, KRAV Tulsa). I also picked up KTCS Fort Smith, 93.9 in McCook, NE, and several others.

What an opening.

I have my full log somewhere, I remember it took me hours to identify every station. I got over 100 stations. I was glued to the radio for more than 6 hours that day, I got stations from every state between Florida and Minnesota. All the locals were covered (so much that the reception "problems" made the news that night), every frequency had multiple stations. I logged 450 mile skip, as well as several translators.

If that happened to me this summer, I would be driving home from work, notice the e-skip, and I would sit in my parked car for 5 hours and have a lot of explaining to do when I get home 5 hours late for an unexplained reason.

I bet the radio stations phone lines were jammed up with people saying "I'm not getting my local! I'm getting something from Missouri!" and then they said "There's nothing wrong with your radio." Then they would say "Yes it is! I tried adjusting antenna, no help!" I wonder if the stories featured DXers picking up stations.

The E Skip on 7/6/2004 was definitely an opening that I'll never forget. I'm pretty sure it's the only time that I've seen E Skip reach the 2 meter ham band here in Southeastern MA.

Here was my log from that day, stations heard for the first time back then are indicated with an @ at the beginning.
