Any radio $$$ in Lake of Ozarks?

KLOZ? KQUL? KZWV? Any of these guys making any money? Seems like an over-radio'ed little market for a three-month tourist season, but I guess it would be a pretty place to live.

Anybody have a clue?

I worked at KLOZ/KQUL for a little over three years as a weekender. In fact, I was there until they let all their weekenders go in budget cuts in January of last year. Some of the weekenders have been brought back, but only for brief shifts and only as needed. The staff there is basically decent, though some people, myself included at times, felt like the owner was trying to do too much of the programming when he should have left that to the PD, who's a good guy. I will, however, give him credit for taking good care of the employees, and he actually paid better for some positions than Columbia and Springfield stations plus provided better benefits.

Last I heard, 101.9 The Wave hadn't made much, if any, money, but it was really just in a position to start turning the corner to profitability within the last 18 months. You can pretty well write off the first two to three years of a new sign-on's operation, and the Wave signed on in '06. Randy Wright has some pretty powerful and wealthy business partners. So, I'm sure they were prepared to ride out those initial couple of years. It looks like there may have been some cuts there in middle management, but I don't really follow the market much anymore. Mornings were the only live shift on the station as middays were voicetracked out of the Quad Cities while Wright voicetracked afternoons himself. It will also be interesting to see what happens with Wright apparently moving to Florida to work for the University's WRUF AM/FM/TV.

It's not a year-round market. Spotloads are unbelievably high in the summer and unbelievably low January through March or April. I can remember having two commercial free hours in a row some Januaries. Also, the three big car dealers closed, and they were the biggest advertisers on the stations. One of them has since reopened, but that was after I left. I know losing Don Hulett in Camdenton and Lakeway Ford was a serious blow to the stations', and I figured Lloyd Belt, which is the one that has since reopened, would have killed them when they closed. It practically sounded like Lloyd Belt owned the station with how many spots they used to buy!

That's a long way from Eldon. Didn't he say he was leaving his TV GM gig to focus on The Wave? Hard to be an owner-operator from a thousand miles away.

When it comes to lake money it is there, only some stations know how to get it. KRMS did a fabulous job and continue to do it to this day. Helps that they were the first station and still are the # 1 though
