Anyone Hear the John & Lance Reunion on 1560 This Morning?

As expected, Lance Zurlein rejoined Granato today. It was the same successful sounding show as it was on KILT. It will be interesting to see if they can now make some ratings noise for the station with the improved signal. I believe it will be a steep uphill climb, but when you look at AM drive sports show landscape they might have a chance. KILT is nothing more than a BORING Houston Texans infomercial, KBME is really not entertaining. Craig Roberts tries too hard and doesn't sound good and the FM Sports Station is where? In my humble opinion Granato & Zurlein represent the only real morning sport/male talk entertainment just as they were on KILT. What was KILT thinking?????

With the reunion of Lance and John, KGOW now has one half of a morning show because of day light authority issues. Most people are already at work when the power up (at least in the winter). KGOW doesn't encode or subscribe to ARBITRON PPM so no one will ever know if they reach minimums to be reported monthly.
Now they have one daypart! As for KILT, they simply have failed to respond and will loose additional personalities to competitors.

If anything John & Lance will help KBME. All of their listeners will follow them to KGOW, leaving KILT, thus the rest of the "AM" Sports listeners will travel over to KBME, and adding to their ratings.

What John and Lance back, all it means is double the live commercial reads for the same 6 sponsors. Go KGOW....GO!

John & Lance went on the air this morning at 7am. That is a mighty short morning drive time. But you know they will squeeze the same 6 advertisers in each day.

Enjoyed the show, I think this is definitely boost their rating and get new advertisers. Now if the station could only fix their other programming time slot disasters that have running in the afternoon and evening they'd have a chance for survival. I just don't believe even Houston can support 4 Sports Talk stations. How bad are ESPN radio's ratings? I just can't help but think that they'd be the first to change formats.

In a 'perfect' situation, I'd love to see John & Lance doing mornings and Charlie Palilo afternoons at the same station... probably never happen (except I think they all share a dislike of Rich Lord)

Now that's funny, I don't care who you are! Unfortunately very true as well.

What exactly is your "yardstick" for a successful sounding show? How many live reads you can pack into a stop set? KILT makes money why yes they do but for me they have always been impossible to listen to.

Let me clarify "successful sounding": Humorous, Informative, Interactive with listeners. Take money out of this equation for now. They obviously have to build a client base and that's not easy, but with ratings it can be done. Back to the my definition of "successful sounding"; Compare it to the other local sports programs in AM Drive:

KILT: (Vandermere & Andre Ware): Informative, no humor, less interaction with few loyal callers, entertainment value overall (scale of 10): 4

KBME: (Roberts & other guy): Not very informative, no humor (failed in attempt), no loyal callers, entertainment value overall: 2

97.9 ESPN: Can't ever pick up because of poor signal, therefore, 0 on all categories.

KGOW 1560: (Granato & Zurlein): Less informative, good humor, great loyal callers, overall entertainment value: 7

Of course that's just my opinion. Yours may be different, but I hope that clarifies. The real yardstick is of course ratings and revenue in the long run. If that doesn't happen, fold up the tent.

Hey adguy, KGOW (Granato and Zurlein) will never be successful, period. I live in the Champions/1960 area and you can't hear them, ever. Until they get the signal problems fixed they will never be a factor in the Houston ratings. You could put the greatest programming in the world on that station and unless somebody can hear it, it doesn't matter. In radio, the really big revenue comes the agencies and they only buy ratings. As for Granato and Zurlein as hosts, that should be left up to the audience and advertisers. At KILT, they never pulled ratings like other Sports/Talk radio stations around the country. Using that as a measurement, it proves they were not "successful". As for advetisers, they did a great job of stroking clients, both on and off the air. But that will only take them so far. To get the really big bucks they will need massive ratings and that will never happen on KGOW.

As I've mentioned before, the big boy radio stations are struggling and these guys at KGOW can't even crack above a ZERO rating share. I still predict that shortly after Thanksgiving the well runs dry and the towel gets thrown in. Even if KGOW had a decent signal, the line up is not Houston competitive. Hoffman is a joke and the afternoon show is nothing but childish. Sorry, but outside of the 6 morning sponsors nobody is buying except the Ragin' Cajun.........

I agree with all you say Rhumbo. I was just voicing MY opinion as to the quality of their show. I buy time for many clients and I would never buy them above $10 a spot until they proved they deserved more. I never said they were financially successful at KILT. I was just comparing them to their competition. I stated on a previous thread that the proliferation of all the male dominated advertising over the last five years (medical, sports bars & restaurants and ED) has given radio consultants and other male format believers lots of fodder to sell male (sports) formats to stations across the country. In Houston it really amounts to a big snow job. There is not enough REAL dollars availble to the format for really more than one station, much less four. As for KGOW, their signal is far better in most areas than it was the first two months. I still believe the odds are stacked heavily against them. With no major local pro or college franchise with them and the lack of talent beyond AM drive they'll never generate the ratings to remain viable beyond the year or so they have in investment bucks.

Again, I like Granato and Zurlein and can pick them up almost everywhere I drive in Houston now. That is my personal opinion. Yours might be different, but that's what makes these boards tick.

Picking up a signal and receiving a listenable signal are two different things. I don't like their chances. If Granato is such a powerful personality how do you explain KILT's ratings going up after he left?

AD GUY,
If you buy media based on Arbitron PPM, you will never buy KGOW. They don't encode their signal and nor do they subscribe to Arbitron. Just the same old original six advertisers and trade at Ragin Cagun. Look for Korean language block shows by mid spring.

As Ed McMahon used to say to Johnny Carson...."YOU ARE CORRECT SIR!"

I have heard they don't encode their signal. That alone will keep them off most buys as they won't show up and the agencies, especially the national agencies, won't buy them. That is surprising because Topper is an experienced salesman/sales manager and he is running the station.

I would never buy them for any of my clients without knowing they reach anyone. Whereas the ratings aren't perfect, they are acurate enough from my experience. I have had a couple of clients ask about them, but then they always NEED to know how many listeners they reach. When I can't answer that question I NEVER buy. When I sold for many years at a low rated station, I ran into this countless times with agencies locally, state and nationwide. GSD&M in Austin used to be notorious for not even considering a station until they posted a MINIMUM number. I don't think they are that stringent anymore because of the proliferation of the ratings universe in radio and TV, but I guarantee you that they will never look at a station like KGOW with NO NUMBERS.

If they don't post up anything by Spring you might see John & Lance in Korean.
