Greetings from the Tri-Cities, TN/VA market.
So here's a question I hope someone can answer to satisfy my curiousity. I grew up in the New River Valley (Mid 80's to Early 90's) listening to that torch-blower WXLK (K-92) in Roanoke. I don't have to tell anyone here what an awesome station that used to be in the 1980's to the early 90's. I mean, they are the reason I chose to get into radio. They all sounded like they were having so much fun that it was contagious.
Anyhoo, I was just wondering if anyone knew what and where some of the jocks like Larry Dowdy, Cat Thomas, Sally Sevareid, Eddie Haskell, Blair Carter are these days.
Thanks and have a happy new year in 07!

Peace,
TWSP

Cat is PD of the WAPE in Jacksonville, FLA
Mo & Sally are at WOLL West Palm Beach.
Bill Jordan is at WRAL in Raleigh.
Suanna Stone is ar WSM-FM Nashville.
I think Eddie is in Denver.

I was there from 95-96. Great fun!

Thanks, Surfdude. I appreciate the information. I wish that there were still radio stations that sounded like K-92 did, say around circa 1987-1988, if only for the nostalgia. They knew how to brand their station's product. When you thought of CHR/Top 40 radio, you had to think K-92, kind of similar to what WQUT did in the same era down here in the Tri-Cities. I never really had a chance to listen to them, but from some of my older radio colleagues, I get the same impression of what they were when you compare it to WXLK.

Not taking anything away from K-92 from the late 80's- mid 90's but the REAL hey-day of that station, the best ever of that station and arguably the best ever for Roanoke radio was from 1980 - the mid 80's. K-92 was LOADED from top to bottom with talent AND music. Bill Jordan and the "always lovely" Mary Ann, Russ Brown, the wild man David Lee Michaels (I still remember him "stealing" the Jeep") and Vince "The Prince" Miller. The playlist was Top 40 which was mostly ROCK ! RIP - Aylett Coleman

BTW, didn't ALL stations have their "hay day" in the 80's anymore these days??? I mean, how many good stations are there anymore???

I have to agree with you there.

Can anyone recall how high the ratings were for the station in the 80's? Someone told me a few years ago that K-92 was one of the highest rated CHR's in the country.

Thanks,
Robyn

I don't know about that (CHR) I hated K-92 when they turned that direction because I hate that format, but K-92 definitely owned Roanoke in the early 80's. K-92 pretty much forced ROV' to go FM. Tho, it was some years later before ROV' actually did move to 96.3 but the process was started because of the domination K-92 had at that time. They even took most of the great jocks ROV' had. IMHO, K-92 has sucked ever since then.

Cool link, Robyn ! THOSE were the days in which I was talking about ! Thanks for posting that link !

Got some more for you:

Bart Prater is Operations Coordinator at WVTF in Roanoke.
Blair Carter is working in the production dept. at the CC cluster in Salt Lake City.
Eddie Haskell is OM of the Citadel cluster in Albuquerque.
Melissa Morgan is on air occasionally but selling real estate full time.
Ellis B. Feaster is in Orlando at (oddly enough) K92 doing country mornings.
Vince Miller runs a photography business in the New River Valley.
David Lee Michaels also has a photography business and is occasionally on air at K92.

I seem to recall that K92 was the #1 CHR station in the entire nation back in 1986, I think? I remember seeing the ad they placed in the Roanoke Times touting this accomplishment.
