Anyone knows the status of 1080 AM in the Triangle?

Most of you who read posts on the Raleigh/Greensboro section of Radio-Info.com
are aware that 1080AM, which is licensed to Selma, hasn't been on the air with
a format since late last year, has anyone heard what may happen to the former
WTSB?, could it go silent?, in a way, this would not surprise me because many
AM stations in smaller towns are signing off the air since from a economically
they can't make it in today's radio environment.

It's 1090 AM.

The owners are KATHERINE ARMBRECHT ZARZOUR and ROBERT J. ZARZOUR, 609 FAIRFAX ROAD WEST, MOBILE, ALABAMA (50% each) according the the FCC website. I've heard the station is for sale.

Taylor Zarzour is now employed by Curtis Media Group.

USELESS TRIVIA ALERT!!

Does anyone know on which stations the call letters WTSB were on before 1080 and in their original inception, what they stood for?

WTSB calls used to belong to 580 in Lumberton. My guess is they stood for something about tobacco. Where Tobacco Sells Best?

;D Who the flip is Taylor? TSB... Transportation Safety Board.. In fact who are his parents..In Fact, How Much.. I'll start the bidding for it at $20,000.... APE

That is correct. In the late 40's when Lumberton's first AM station went on the air on 1340, the calls, WTSB were assigned and it stood for "Where Tobacco Sells Best." In 1954, to keep the theme alive, the second full time Lumberton AM when on the air on 1480 with 1 kw DA-2 and the calls WAGR, short for agriculture. In the early 60's WAGR changed frequencies to 580 daytime N-DA to drop the directional for better day coverage and then in the mid 80's WAGR and WTSB swapped frequencies with WAGR going to 1340 and WTSB moving to 580 daytime in a 3 way station deal that allowed Beasley to purchase WTSB's underdeveloped FM, WGSS and move it Fayetteville to become WKML. 580 WTSB was then sold to a 3rd party and finally went dark in the mid to late 90's after being sold several times and one of those with a short stint back with Beasley.

Like I said, useless trivia.

Back to the original question: Has anyone, in fact, heard anything about what will become of WTSB 1090 and its Durham-based broadcast partner WDUR 1490? I'm still curious myself, although pretty much everything I listened to on 1490 (Mike and Mike, Packman, etc.) has moved to 620 The Bull...

Where is Brian Hart when we need him? ;)

So did Taylor Zarzour (one of the few former show hosts on 1090) get that sports director job for Curtis Media that was advertised somewhere I saw?.....

Yes,

Taylor is now the Sports Director for Curtis Media. Congrats to him, and to the group. It's a great fit. I've heard him on WPTF and 96 Rock so far and I gotta say he sounds great on both.

Where am I? Oh.. I'm still around. Anybody need some voice or prod work done? ;)

you know, I typed that in at first too, before changing it to "great fit"

Re: Anyone knows the status of 1090 AM in the Triangle?

Hey I heard both of yall on Monday.
But 1090 was silent and 1490 was playing the jukebox.
Well 1490 where I was was playing MOYL.
Hmmmmmmmm how did that happen? Is it a secret or sumthin?! ;)

Re: Anyone knows the status of 1090 AM in the Triangle?

That's a good question, maybe 1490 in Durham will go to the "Music Of Your Life"
format, which the triangle area does not have on a station presently.
As for the former 1090 WTSB, i won't be surprised if it's sold to a christian
radio group or someone who might put another talk outlet on with other
programs not heard in this area of North Carolina.

What time were you tuned in to 1090? That station's license requires them to sign off every night at dusk, while 1490 broadcasts 24/7. I remember how annoying it was, when catching the Braves games on 1490, the announcement coming on saying 1090 must sign off for the night and to tune in to 1490 to continue listening to the game. Now, of course, I am still looking for a local station carrying the Braves; none of the Triad AM affiliates reach this area too well, if at all...

It was during the afternoon, daylight hours.
I haven't heard 1090 on for a week or two around Raleigh.
I have heard 1490 on most of the time while tooling around Raleigh with the jukebox format.

The 1490 I was referring to above is in Fayetteville, WAZZ, or it should still be WFLB like it was when I was a kid.
They run some standards format, I don't think it's technically MOYL though.
They also run the Braves' games.
They are the only station near Raleigh I've heard that does since WTSB went down.

The Zarzours are probably wanting to recoup too much money for most people's tastes for 1090 or 1490.
I miss what the stations were doing for a while there.
Hope the stations end up doing something, which is better than nothing.

According to one source I saw, WAZZ is Dial Global. "Music and Memories" is what that format calls itself, and that's what the web site says, but it doesn't list DJs. If they have Jeff Rollins, Chick Watkins and Ed Brand, that's them.

Oh yeah I think I have heard Chick Watkins on there when I'm down there.
Curt Nunnery who has been in Fayetteville for like 50 years does mornings.
I still miss Dr Larry Records Cannon on 1490 though... 8)

I know both of them. Curt is from old school radio and Larry is a blast.

Is the Dr. still around Fayetteville?
I heard he had passed away a few years back, but my sources are notoriously flippant about accuracy.
That would be a cool cat to meet, I mean unless he's passed on....
