Anyone listening to the yacht rock weekend on klos

I just wish they were doing it just like they did April fools day. Where they said 95.5 yacht rock whereas now there just saying KLOS yacht rock weekend.

Personally I don't care much for the music but I guess it did so well April fools day they are giving it another go...At least it's something different instead of the usual best 500 songs of all time or A-Z weekend or an all 80s weekend or best of the 90s weekend etc...

I'm listening right now. It's weird hearing KLOS play Michael McDonald's 'Sweet Freedom' which is now regulated to AC Gold. Ok, now its Toto 'Rosanna'. Yeah, this is way too out of format for KLOS. And to do it for the whole weekend...strange. I wonder what their hardcore rock listeners are thinking right now. 😲

Now, it's Kenny Loggins ' This Is It' ....

UPDATE: Now it's Christopher Cross 'Sailing'. OMG

To their credit, heard between songs.... It's the KLOS Yacht Rock Weekend, so, relax...seriously, just RELAX, Def Leppard and Metallica return on Tuesday.

Heard it on my way home from work and I thought they were stunting for a second, since it's so out of format. KRTH doesn't even touch some of these anymore.

"Silly Love Songs" yikes!!!

But as they said "the angst and distortion will return on Tuesday".

Of course it's cheesy, but kind of digging it too????

Not meeting the expectations of P1 listeners is never a good idea. Nobody is listening to KLOS for Toto, Kenny Loggins, and Christopher Cross. On a holiday weekend? I'm all in favor of creativity and pushing the envelope...radio needs to do this more. But you need to stay in your wheel house.

I agree. This is a terrible idea. On a terribleness scale of 1 to 10, I'd put this at about a 50. If they wanted to send most of their usual listeners elsewhere, mission accomplished!

That is a distortion of the facts, and you know it.

Since when have people called for a station to completely break genre format for an entire 3 day holiday weekend?

This isn't a specialty show on a Sunday morning we're talking about here or a case of a station spicing up its playlist a bit.

The station is playing a bunch of artists its audience likely doesn't want to hear for three full days and has tossed nearly all the artists its audience expects to hear into the trash bin.

Who the heck has ever recommended that KLOS play sleepy dentist office music for three straight days? People tune to KLOS to escape such crap, not to consume it!

I'm not going to dig them up, but suggestions have been made for entire holiday weekends of "every song to hit #2 but not #1" and such.

If it's a bad idea (and I think it is), KLOS will probably see a hit to its cume extending into the early part of the September book.

Huh? They're not playing country music. Yacht rock IS rock. These are songs they played when they were currents. Back when the audience was more open to hearing the full diversity of the genre than they might be now. Back before everyone was a critic. Artists like Steely Dan were revered for their ability to weave jazz and rock together.

BTW, they're still doing Breakfast With The Beatles. Again. So they're breaking format while they're breaking format. Horrors!

Exactly. They're giving the tired old burnt to a crisp playlist a rest. You and everyone else should be celebrating. The key thing is they've already told you that it's temporary. They'll bring back Led Zepplin on Tuesday.

The other positive? It's sponsored! By Kia.

When they did it on April Fool's Day. it was a hit. Even Richard Wagoner praised it as a great idea:

If you saw the documentary on yacht rock, you'd know these artists have a sense of humor about it. Except for Donald Fagen.

So take a break from your routine for a few times. Would it kill you to hear ELO? Or just go to the beach.

As a big yacht rock fan (I listen to XM's channel a lot) I have to say this is a terrible idea.

Do you want your favorite restaurant "breaking format" with a completely different menu over the three day holiday? Of course not. You want your favorite dishes they serve. In the restaurant biz you need "regulars" who come in often to succeed. In radio, you have P1s. Both are hard to get and easy to lose.

As a radio fan, I really appreciate it and would like to see more out-of-the-box programming like it; as a station owner or stakeholder, it has to get a thumbs down.

Restaurants do that around Thanksgiving and Christmas. Valentines Day. Even McDonalds and Arbys change the menu from time to time.

The station owner likes it because it's sponsored. Drive a Kia, then decide.

The key thing that was brought up every time someone talks about holiday countdowns or specials is that listenership is usually down over holiday weekends. There are fewer people listening, so there's less risk. Holiday weekends themselves are a break in the routine. You can sleep late on a Monday, or maybe go to Las Vegas for a few days. They were going to take a hit anyway. Might as well have some fun.

Kia would do much better for themselves by sponsoring content that will reach 100% of the station's normal audience, not the 25% who think it is a great idea and will stick around for it.

And why is Kia advertising to a demographic (yacht rock fans) that is almost entirely 55+? Kias are what you buy when you are waiting tables to put yourself through college, they're not for affluent old people who drive BMWs. The format is called YACHT rock for a reason. Talk about missing the mark.

Really! When KLOS played these as currents. So when exactly were these played on AOR?

Bertie Higgins, Christopher Cross, Hughes Corporation, Kenny Loggins Gino Vanelli...

There are going to be exceptions. Most got played on AOR as currents. Here's a sample hour:

1:02 PMACEHow Long1975G
1:05 PMSCAGGS, BOZLido Shuffle1976G
1:09 PMSTEWART, ALTime Passages1978G
1:16 PMJOEL, BILLYMy Life1978G
1:20 PMLOOKING GLASSBrandy (You're A Fine Girl)1972G
1:28 PMLOGGINS, KENNYWhenever I Call You 'Friend'1978G
1:32 PMBUFFETT, JIMMYMargaritaville1977G
1:36 PMEARTH, WIND & FIRESeptember1979G
1:45 PMELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRAMr. Blue Sky1977G
1:50 PMFRAMPTON, PETERBaby, I Love Your Way (Live)1976G
1:55 PMHALL & OATESRich Girl1976G
1:57 PMSTEELY DANFM1978G

And just then, Hagerty did something completely predictable:

It's blurry, but Dan Fogelberg and Tim Weisberg, Al Stewart, Firefall, Toto and Billy Joel are on that list.

Gino's at #17. Ambrosia and Hall and Oates are on the list.

As well as Boz Scaggs, the Michael McDonald-era Doobie Brothers, and...Christopher Cross----who broke out of AOR and crossed over to Top 40 and AC.

The only ones AOR didn't play were the Hues Corporation (though I'll bet BMR and Shadoe Stevens slipped in a cut back in the day)....and Bertie Higgins.

Wow! So, in 1980 Christopher Cross was #78 on the AOR song list. However, that doesn't mean every AOR played it. KUPD was an AOR that I listened to back then, and I KNOW they NEVER played Christopher Cross. NEVER!

Right. I was responding to Kilowatt's list. KLOS and KMET may have played Christopher Cross at the very height of his popularity in 1980, perhaps "Ride Like the Wind" which is a bit more of a rocker than his other stuff, but otherwise, no.

Gino Vinellli? Fughettaboutit.
