Anyone remember “You’re on U.S. One” (WUSL)?

Wasn’t Power 99’s predecessor a soft AC station similar to the old Magic format on WMGK… and weren’t both Jim Gearhart of NJ101.5 and Juan Varleta of B101 on this station, or was that the old “Kiss 100?”

Does anyone know… (1) what year beautiful music WPBS became WUSL (“U.S. One”), and… (2) what year WUSL dropped that format and became “Power 99,” or was there another format in between?

Yes. The old US 1 had great music. I thought their mix was better than WMGK's at that time.

"U.S. One" and then under new PD Jeff Wyatt it was Kiss for a few weeks before it became Power 99 FM, Kiss name was challenged in court by the owner(I think Dan Lerner)of what became Kiss 100 then Y100.

WUSL signed on as "US-1" in the late fall of 1976. Jim Nettleton was the original morning man and Juan did late nights. They also went Country briefly in the early eighties before the flip to Urban.
Edited by jimwalsh2001 on 03/24/06 07:25 AM.

WUSL was "Continuous Country 99 FM" from 4th of July weekend 1981 to October, 1982. Jocks included Juan Varlita and Pat Winters (now doing traffic). It was a 3 in a row type country with songs back-announced. On Labor Day weekend 1981 sister station WFIL also switched to a personality-oriented country station, which became the only country station when "Kiss 99" was born early on a Saturday morning in October, 1982. When "Kiss 100" chalenged them for the name (even though they weren't on the air yet) WUSL was called "99 FM" then became "Power 99".

Also on US-1 was Jim Gearhart, who had been MOR WFIL's morning man in the 1960's prior to the Pop Explosion, then went to WCBS-AM New York before they went all news, then KIRO Seattle before returning to Philadelphia. He then went to WBUD as Jim Hart and finally to WKXW where he's been on mornings since the early '90's.

In the spring of 1976, Jim Nettleton returned to WFIL as
a weekend part-timer. He was putting in time until WUSL was up and
running.

I remember when Star 104.5 first signed in in 1990, playing "superstars of the 80's and 90's." Barbara Summers was there. What ever happened to her?

WUSL (98.9) was purchased by Lin Broadcasting and signed on the Fall, 1976.
The original lineup was as follows:
Jim Nettleton/Jim Gearhart ( doing news and other short features) 6-10 AM
Gene Manning 10-3 PM
Kris Chandler 3-7PM
Bob Korsy 7-12 AM
Juan Varlieata12-6AM (the only holdover from WPBS)
Pat Winters joined the station in early 1977 doing overnights and Juan moved into 10-3 at this time.
Pat moved into evening in 1977 when Bob Corsy left the station.
I do not remember who was overnights at this time, but I think that Ken Mann did it for a short time in 1978-1979 before going to WDAS.
Diamond Jim Nettleton left in Spring 1979, he wanted to change the station to Adult Standards (he did a big band show on Saturday Nights in 1978-79)He moved to WPEN shortly after leaving. Kris Chandler took over mornings with Jim Gearhart and Pete Booker did afternoons. This lineup lasted until the station went Country in July, 1981 and Jim Gearhart left shortly after this along with a majority of the lineup.
In 1982 Pat Winters moved to WFIL 7-12 PM and Barbara Summers replaced Pat in the middays when the current Urban Format commenced. (they switched places)
Barbara Summers stayed until 1988 moving over to WSNI to do Afternoon Drive.
She stayed at 104.5 until Summer 1991 at that time she was doing mornings with Kelly Randall. They were both fired in Summer, 1991. Barbara moved over to WMGK for partime work in the Fall 1991 but left shortly because of no FT opportunity.
She currently works with her husband at Wallabee Productions as a voice over talent.

I remember one of those features called "Tales of the Unexplained."

Back in its day, U.S. 1 seemed to have a rather unique selection of adult contemporary music. I heard songs on there I know I didn't hear anywhere else (and probably haven't heard anywhere since): "Silver Dreams" The Babys; "The Light of My Life" Starland Vocal Band; "Ain't It Funny" Lenny LeBlanc.
