Apollo/Cox’s Houston radio cluster adds TV stations

KKBQ, KTHT, KHPT and KGLK will have KHOU and KTBU as new cluster partners: https://radioinsight.com/headlines/...todays-standard-general-acquisition-of-tegna/

KHOU and KTBU are being spun out of TEGNA, along with a few other TV stations in order to make the deal pass regulatory hurdles. This also separates KHOU from most of its legacy Belo siblings.

Wonder if the radio stations will stay in a separate facility or eventually co-located with the two TV stations?

Interesting that Apollo/Cox is not getting KENS in San Antonio as Cox has a radio cluster there as well.

Oddly enough, WFAA, the founding Belo TV station in Dallas, is also spun off TEGNA as well.

I thought that was interesting, too. I wonder how many of those spinoffs are due to reach as TEGNA was already roughly at the 40% coverage cap? I don't believe it could legally add WFXT without divesting a few properties.

I also wonder how comfortable the FCC and DOJ will be in blessing these deals. From what I understand, Apollo will be a passive investor in the new company, and it already owns most of Cox. Apparently, lawyers for the two companies believe Apollo's interest will not be attributable, but I don't believe the current FCC has seen a deal like this yet. The lawyers generally know more than we do, but we've seen them get these wrong enough times I still have to wonder.
