Apple Considering Bid For English Soccer Streaming Rights — Report

Apple Named as a candidate to get Soccer Streaming Rights from the UK.

Apple is said to be interested in bidding for the rights to broadcast English soccer games, according to a new report published this morning.

The report, found in Bloomberg, states that the rights currently under consideration at Apple would allow the company to broadcast games from the Premier League, the highest level of English soccer, alongside games from the lower-ranked English Football League. Deadline has reached out to Apple for comment on the matter.

The move would expand the company’s global soccer coverage following its $2.5B, 10-year deal with Major League Soccer to stream games from the US-based league. The MLS deal was one of the biggest sports streaming deals in history.

I wonder if the MLS took a hit in the ratings with Apple taking over. Are casual fans going to get Apple TV just for MLS or would they have maybe watched if it was on conventional TV.

Premier League is a whole different animal.

When 4 of my 5 kids were growing up "they" were proclaiming soccer was the next big thing but that obviously applied only to the Latin immigrant population because in my personal observation not much of the 'native' population of the USA gives a flinging farthing about the game once their kids are done with it.

And yes, I played back in the 50's (high school), indoor (as an adult), umpire, administrator and coach of U-10 and U-12 teams so I've got some experience. And I have to say the high school programs in my neck of the woods are great to watch BUT above that they are a boring second place to my other boring 'sport', golf.

This move by Apple doesn't look very smart unless Apple is trying to turn our young kids into lifetime iPhoney users and Pepsi drinkers (UGH!).

These days however any activity that can get kids to put down their phones and get some decent exercise is a good idea.

And, is it true that 'soccer' in Euroland and Sud America is slang for 'riot'?
