Appreciation thread: WMMR A->Z is my favorite two weeks of radio each year

In a world of homogenized playlists, I love that they do this each and every year. It's these kinds of traditions that keep me coming back to WMMR and I'll be locked in for the next 2-3 weeks.

The fact that they're playing Garbage "#1 Crush" -> Iron Maiden "2 Minutes To Midnight" -> Bruce Springsteen "4th of July Asbury Park" puts a smile on my face. Love all three bands.

When were you on WHTG? Was it before or after the previous owner sold it? There is an interesting documentary on YouTube about the station and I spoke to someone about a year or so ago who said the owner back in the 90’s lived at the radio station and she was quite a character. I’ve heard some air checks and it sounded like an unusual station.

FM106.3 (WHTG) was actually my first job in commercial radio. They hired me for weekend overnights and fill-ins at a whopping $5.05 an hour in 1994. (That almost covered my gas, tolls and breakfast on the way home driving from SJ to Asbury Park...)

Still remember pulling up to Faye's house - which really was where the station was located - and wondering what I was getting myself into. (hah) Was a fun couple of years, but definitely the oddest experience. You should have seen my face the time I was doing an overnight shift and Faye came into the studio, asking me to turn down the music because she was trying to sleep!

I miss the index card music rotation system. There was a big box of categorized index cards, so we actually had some control over the playlist and I could bump mellower songs I didn't like back to the later hours of my shift. :)

Really was a unique station and didn't really appreciate it as much as I should have. The fact that I got to play local bands like Dramarama and The Smithereens alongside all of the early 90's alt rock like Juliana Hatfield, Lemonheads, Belly, etc. and deep cuts from 80s bands like The Cure, Depeche Mode, etc. was something that will probably never exist again in commercial FM radio.

I was also living in SJ back in ‘94 and I remember that nobody went to Asbury Park back then unless they were going to the Stone Pony. It wasn’t a good place. The shops were all boarded up and the boardwalk was literally crumbling. Reluctantly a couple of summers ago I agreed to meet up there with my cousin and her family. At first I couldn’t imagine why they wanted to meet there. But when I arrived, I was astounded. Everything was open, the boardwalk had been rebuilt and the place was jammed. It turned out to be a great day! If anything, it was a little too crowded for my liking (as are most beaches in July) but I’d definitely go back.

Almost three weeks this year! I'm having fun listening as much as I can in Vermont, but I'm sick of hearing about your damn Senate race. At least nobody's running a fake doctor this term.
I'm not going to veer the thread any further off-topic than this... but yeah. Just trying to watch a Phillies game and having like 2 spots per candidate per ad break... it's getting insane
