I was in the Detroit area this weekend and had a chance to listen to some of the radio stations... especially 100.3 WNIC, along with a little bit of 96.3 WDVD and 105.1 WMGC. Is it just me, or are a lot of these stations starting to sound alike? Their formats seem to be blending together.
We already know that 106.7 The Beat has essentially become Rhythmic CHR. 96.3 WDVD's version of Hot AC is sounding more and more like CHR. For instance, the Rihanna song "Only Girl (in the World)" is really a CHR song, and I question whether it belongs on a Hot AC station. 96.3 is playing it.
Even the mainstream AC stations WNIC and WMGC are playing CHR songs that seem out of place for mainstream AC. WNIC really likes Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream". On WGMC I heard Bruno Mars' "Just the Way You Are" and "Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga. Is mainstream AC changing, or are these stations just pushing the envelope?
So yeah... I guess there are songs that can be played on six different stations in Detroit now: 95.5, 96.3, 98.7, 100.3, 105.1, and 106.7. Is this kind of "format fusion" happening elsewhere?
