Are a lot of you guys on here involved in the radio business?

Or just avid fans?

I'm kinda young (25), but really WMMS and WNCX were the stations I grew up listening to, as that's what my mom and step dad listened ALL THE TIME, so I have a strong connection with them. when I got a little older I found Jammin 92.3 and was kinda let down when they went the wayside, but WKRK still plays music I like, but really I'm a Hot Talk guy now. I want to listen and laugh, which is why I still listen to Max, Alan Cox, and sometimes Rover after 9 when Maxwell likes to just play even more music.

I wanted to have a career in radio as the whole medium holds a special place in my heart, but I signed up for that OCB school and really thought it was just ridiculous, I learned nothing I didn't already know, and also they lured me in the lies, promising me and interview with Bo Matthews right off the bat, which I was told by Jim Szymanski that this was unlikely. Also I got to meet Dumb's (Shaun Street), and yes the mean things they say seem to be true :\

Although an acquaintance of mine from the school got the intern position on Maxwell at MMS like 3 weeks before he got canned, so I don't know how that turned out for him

On a side note, does anyone know the kind of contracts/salaries Max/Dan/Tiff are getting? Or Chad Zumock/Alan Cox, Dieter and Duji for that matter? It's always interested me as Charlie and Dumb have stated their hourly pay many times, and I assume Jeffrey gets some sort on irregular compensation. I just really want to know what Rover's golden contract did for his underlings. Also how much the MWL show got improved to do half a GD show! I know Chunk definitely got a decent upgrade.

Also did Dieter ever get in trouble for hitting that woman with the beer bottle at Roverfest?

Sorry for rambling but as you can see I've had radio on my mind for a long time!

Cheers!

This is generally an industry insider board, for people who work or have worked in the biz. For the casual fan, you'll here a lot of jargon that might be hard to understand, and find out what miserable people most broadcasters are. (That's a joke; sort of.)

A word to the wise...run don't walk to the sales department! Sure being on the air is fun, but if your looking for a career it's in sales. Play your cards right and much money can be made. Plus you get to meet buisness people, and if you live by the golden rule you will make many life long friends at the same time.

At least in the market I work all media, radio, cable and TV are looking for people who want to learn the trade.

Thats my 2 cents.

edit - my original post was to say I met Dumb's wife Andrea

also I'm on my way to degrees in linguistics and philosophy so the odd's of me ending up in radio are slim, but if I could somehow intertwine the fields it could be fun.

If you would like to hear philosophy in action, may I suggest you tune in Tuesday afternoons from 2:05 until 3:00pm to "The Dennis Prager Show" on WHK 1420 AM. That's when he does his "Ultimate Issues Hour". It can be fascinating listening.

Hey, you're only a few years older than me then. I used to want to pursue a career in radio too, but I thought better of it and now I'm getting a degree in public relations, a field in which I see some job security in the future. I'm from Cincinnati and I've met several of my radio heroes from there, like Gary Burbank, and I also went to an open house for the OCB down there and felt the same way you do about it which is why I came up here for college. I won't say which college, but I will say we just lost a basketball game to a school with a freaking marsupial as their mascot! :'(

I've been on these boards since I was 15, it's always a good place to find the latest rumors and learn a lot about the business. It takes a little while to figure out who knows what they're talking about versus who's full of it, but it's not that hard. Welcome aboard, and good luck with your linguistics and philosophy!

Is it taboo to ask if anyone has old (pre 2009) MWL podcasts? I have a lot of 2009 podcasts on my old PC at home (I live in Athens near OU now) and I frequently put them on as background noise while I'm studying and to remind me of the good ol days ;D . But hearing Early MWL and even Krackerman would be great too.

I found some "site" that has a huge amount available in a single file but the connection is god awful so it's not really working.

Dasfonzie:

I can best summarize it this way:

Start at the bottom. And start in sales. This is 23 years of experience talking.

But if being in the air chair is where you want to be, still start at the bottom. What I mean by that is apply for a job as a board operator for a small town AM station. A board operator usually does little more than ride herd on the console during a ball game, playing local commercials during the breaks in game action. Don't apply to a big-city FM right off the bat. I'm talking about working at a station you wouldn't be caught dead listening to. These are places to sharpen your skills and rightfully earn your way to the top.

It will require commitment on your part. Working evenings, weekends, and sometimes even holidays. Since most stations are on the air 24/7, that's pretty much how flexible you need to be.

Good Luck and Godspeed.

I don't think some of you read the thread... I'm not seeking a job in radio. I know enough people in the business to know it's not for me. I just like to know all the behind the scenes info and stuff. Just a passion. I'll stick to what I'm actually going to college for

Stay the course with those mentioned and if you want to dally in radio part-time, that's the route I would go. Funny I say those words... as that''s what was told to me back in '91 when I started....ok... yeah yeah... stones and glass houses. Radio was different then.
