Are there any seasonal radio stations in Florida?

Just wondering.. When the winter visitors (long term) and short term folks on vacation, don't the demographics of the 'target market" change dramatically? Do any stations change their programming to reflect this?

Perhaps you mean a station that caters to seniors in the winter (snowbird season) and skews younger in the summer?

Or maybe a station in Panama City would go "all spring break" active rock, alternative or hip-hop in March?

No such formats in FL AFAIK, although it is an intriguing idea.

I think the limitation would be Arbitron methodology. It doesn't pick up spring breakers at all, and probably has a hard time hitting the seasonal visitors who turn off their phones from April to November.

The spring breakers come and go; was thinking that in some areas of FL you have the "locals" who stay all year and a tremendous number of tourists and snowbirds in the winter. Could a station carve out a niche, perhaps calling themselves snowbird radio in winter and cracker radio in summer and get both seasonal listeners and advertisers?

The way 1010 AM in Tampa has been running...seems like they enjoy classic country during the summer and Sports during football season, lol

I don't recall any stations specifically catering to snowbirds, but I *do* remember there was a syndicated show for Canadian snowbirds which aired on several Florida stations. Was only produced during the winter months. Can't remember the name of the show or host, but I believe it originated in Toronto.

The whole reason for holiday music is to get people in the mood for shopping. Quite frankly, it disgusts me. I know people in Macomb, IL who run an LPFM station there they don't drag their Yule music until deeper in the season. It's all about getting people in a spending mood. We have officially lost the true meaning of the season. Christmas music should be rolled in slowly and 2 weeks prior a full music spree. I enjoy it but this is overkill.

Programming to a seasonal audience would be suicide. None of those people get Arbitron diaries. It would be, in my opinion, a tough sell to local clients as well. No numbers+No agency spots (lack of numbers)+difficult local sales=non existant radio station.

Interesting idea, but completely impractical.

Who knows if it's impratical unless one tries it? For a station going down the tubes I can quote Dykan, "when you ain't gothin, you got nothin left to lose." Hey throw some darts, even the audience would probably appreciate the effort.

Way back when-WAMR 1320 in Venice used to carry Canada Calling, for Canadian visitors. They also carried, I believe an hour of German programming for tourists. That was way before CC , when they were a Big Band station.

"Canada Calling" with Prior Smith..produced in Ottowa..brough to us by Royal bank of Canada, and Craven "A" (the couldn;t say that they were cigarettes)

Craven "EH"?

I'm not sure but I think the lyrics are from "like a Rolling Stone" by Dylan. On a seperate note, i used to listen to "Canada calling" once in awhile although I'm not Canadian.
Strange eh?

When I was the News Director at 1530 WENG in Englewood, we used to carry Canada Calling. But one day, the host, Prior Smith, called the war "the SO CALLED WAR ON TERROR." We took it very personal and cancelled the show immediately. The station got international attention because of the cancellation.
