Are those Tanya Roberts spots putting L.A. stations in legal jeapordy?

Anybody hear the Tanya Roberts spot on KTLK and
KLAC touting a free vacation to Vegas but is really a time
share commerical without any disclaimer whatsoever?

Assuming this is a spot that is also playing outside of L.A. what
are the rules on something like this? Isn't there a
in-house legal department to vet something that
reeks of bait and switch type deception?

I hear this a lot on Fox Sports Radio and the Jim Rome show, so this is airing on a nationwide basis. In fact, Fox's Chris Myers and JT the Brick often do spots with Tanya together. I, too, smell a rat about this one. I called it about a year ago out of curiosity and they wanted to charge a small fee to my credit card. I told the lady I'd have to find it and call her back. I never did. At that time, it was for Soleil Resorts. This time, it's for Tahiti Village.
______________

Tanya Roberts spots

There is nothing wrong with these spots that run locally & nationally. Time share & free vacation offers are legal in all States, except in the State of Confusion~

On that spot,Tanya sounds like a 1950's era Vegas hooker on the 3rd shift, talking some poor schlub out of his last C note.

These spots bug the heck out of me...it's such a scam. First off, it's "Hi, this is Tanya Roberts" like everyone will say "Oh wow! it's her!"

They should just say, "This is the washed up actress who went topless in Sheena and is not known for anything else..." but I digress.

It sounds like a huge scam, and it just bugs me the way she's like "Oh yeah, almost forgot...call now and you get tickets to a hot new show, right on the strip!"

Yeah..not the most natural read lol! She did some real
awkward spots with George Noory, "oooh George how bout'
Wynn's Las Vegas, just a little ha ha shack on the strip."

That's so funny! : )

Why do I see a Dateline NBC hidden camera investigation in the
near future where some unfortunate reporter is locked into
a room for 12 hours and forced to listen a time share
zealot.

Ummm, you say that like it's a negative thing...

I don't see a real problem with it legally. Plus hopefully most people will realize that you "don't get anything for free" and that many things in Vegas are time share type deals. I mean walk the strip and people stop you and try to give you free shows "IF" you come watch a presentation for a time share. I first heard these ads while driving to Vegas on the "Highway Stations". The only discalimer was Nevada residents are not eligible. In that ad, they play it off like she is getting interviewed by this guy then breaks out with her free rooms deal. Plus I was like, Tanya sounds sorta like she is in a time machine. She tells this guy that he is "looking fly". LOL.

The Highway Stations FM 98 & 99?

Yes that is Bart Torres interviewing her. The first time I heard those spots were on the Highway Stations also. You know those stations were Howard Hughes dream. Guess he hadn't envisioned Satellite Radio, the CD, or the Mp3 player?.

I can't stand her screeching "Vegas is calling!"

That probably means there is no A/C in the showroom!

yeah, but they've been around for quite some time and now expanded to include "The Drive" and "Highway Country." Obviously they're making money somehow.

Re: The Highway Stations FM 98 & 99?

They are still a great idea. Lets not forget that Satellite radio is still only a small segment of the listening audience. Do I need to pay for satellite service just because I driving from LV to LA? I think not...
Just wish there were more of these stations (even if they are largly low budget).

She was on Charlie's Angels. She came on as one of the
replacement Angels in a later season. Her big starring role
on the big screen was as "Sheena Queen of the Jungle", not a
very good movie, but not horrible.

She also starred with Roger Moore in the 007 flick
"A View To A Kill" and later had the role as Donna's Mom on
"That 70's Show". If I remember correctly she left the show
to care for someone in her family that was ill.
The spots aren't that great. She uses a lot of terms that
don't fit most of the formats of the stations that air them.
They're recorded in a unique way. The stations production
person or the air talent call her. They record the spot
loosely using the same script as everyone else. It's then
sent to the agency or company itself, edited by them and sent
back to the station to be aired. She's actually a nice lady
who like everyone else is just trying to make a living.
Edited by calguy on 04/15/06 08:02 AM.

They do, in droves. Here's an article I wrote about them last year:

Scott,
That article rocks! I had no idea so much went into those stations!
BTW: They have a website...

The same could be said of any (BLEEP)(lady of loose morals) on Holt Blvd.

She is a party to a crime, and should be as guilty as the crooks who run the scam.

These ads and their ilk are a major reason why KNX is cicling the drain. There was a time when listeners could count on standards and practices at major stations.

Crud like this costs an all-news outlet the one thing it has: it's credibility.
Edited by zumahans1 on 04/16/06 05:49 AM.

Gee how do you really feel?
But seriously, I won't pass judgment on her morals because
I don't know her, as I'm sure you don't either, and just because
she does these spots doesn't mean she has loose morals.
Maybe poor judgment, but we all have to make a living and that's
what she's chosen to do. As for the air talent that "interview"
her, they're just doing what they're told, no more, no less.
I doubt it's the only reason that KNX is "circling the drain" as
you put it. Just one of many contributing factors... Oh and
these spots are running just about everywhere because in radio today
sales rules and dollars are the bottom line...
