ARE VIEWERS TIRED OF NETWORK SATURDAY NIGHT RERUNS

Another topic we've covered on here before.

Some, including me, say IF YOU SHOW SOMETHING WORTH WATCHING....WE WILL COME.

Others say, DON'T BOTHER, NOBODY WATCHES ANYTHING SATURDAY NIGHT ANYWAY.

Well it looks like the top crowd won this round.....as new (non-live) shows topped all but a Big Bang
Theory rerun this past Saturday.

COPS and 48 Hours. Not exactly a compelling sample size. What's more, those numbers across the board show precisely why it was the second group that has been shown to be correct.

Doesn't matter to me. I DVR everything and time-shift it, in any case. By the weekend, I usually have a back-log of shows to watch, so when I'm home on Saturday nights, I fire up the DVR, or put on an NetFlix movie.

Well we just disagree on everthing.........that's all I can say. Just keep believing what you want.

Do you go out to Tommy's Joynt or bring home one of those great beef sandwiches and a Steam Beer?

I miss S.F. :(

The difference being some of us have facts, in the form of numbers, on our side. Those viewership levels aren't sustainable for anything other than some bargain-basement material. Believing otherwise is all well and good...and entirely imaginary. :)

Once again.....it's fine to believe what you wanna believe. But, it's even better to respect
the opinion someone else may have even if it differs from yours.

We all can't be JUST LIKE inhomerjay and landtuna...... We have our own opinions and
even if yours if different, you should be able to "respect" the opinions of others. THE END

Canada is living proof that people will watch TV in Saturday nights. Hockey Night in Canada and Coaches Corner dominate the ratings on Saturday nights across Canada.

Although hockey doesn't have the same cultural significance in the United States, if there is compelling programming people will watch.

It's pretty obvious that live sports, especially when it's a major game like the the LSU/Alabama game a few weeks back will draw more viewers than the same old reruns and reality shows. ABC has taken the step of having Saturday night college football on a weekly basis in recent years, and I believe CBS could do the same thing. I've actually wondered why a network couldn't go to having Saturday night sports year round if they were to get the right deals arranged. Have college football in the Fall, college or NBA basketball (If they don't commit suicide by not ending their labor dispute) and/or NHL Hockey in the Winter and Early Spring, and Major League Baseball and/or NASCAR racing in the Summer. It might take a few years to get the contracts arranged, but it would be better than the same old junk that is on most Saturday nights.

The OP is drawing broad conclusions based upon one week of ratings.

'Just keep believing what you want'? Practicing what you preach, I guess.

That LSU/Alabama game was definitely a "get" for the networks. I believe college football in the fall, and college basketball in the winter, would do well for the nets, but I wonder about how much appeal baseball or NASCAR would have in the spring/summer months. Still, I believe that it would do better than reruns.

Networks don't want to waste big budget programming on a night when the right viewers (young with unestablished buying habits) aren't home (according to research). An episode of a sitcom or drama has a higher production budget than a big football game. Cable networks run new stuff on Saturday night but those a more dependent on subscriber fees. It's just not profitable to put expensive scripted programming on a night when the right viewers aren't at home. It's not that people aren't home on Saturday, it's that the right people aren't at home on Saturday evenings. The only programming that works on Saturday night for the networks seems to be sports. People will stay home for a big game but not a scripted show they can watch later on the DVR. You can't watch sports on delay these days. That might have worked in 1980. People who complain about nothing on TV on Saturday evenings are probably just a bunch of old cheapskates without cable (according to research)

I haven't been to Tommy's Joynt in years - not sure why...now that you've mentioned it, I think I'll check it out again. Never gave up Anchor Steam beer, though. ;D

I'm not. I always have sometyhing on TiVo or the VCR that needs to be watched. The My Network station used to have movies, and so did one of the CW stations. And the other My Network station.

I think you could do well with original programming on Saturday night, but it would take something unusual to break current habits. Sports is good, but expensive. Year round there's no reason to waste sports on Saturday nights when other time periods would have higher ratings.

I'm surprised that one network doesn't go for inexpensive crime dramas and mystery shows. Just commission some cheaper shows with unknown actors and run with it.
