Armed men storm an Ecuador TV studio during a live broadcast as attacks in the country escalate

This attacks happened one of the major networks in the country. Also at play is the reported escape of a major gang leader from prison that's a factor here.

GUAYAQUIL, Ecuador (AP) — Masked men broke onto the set of a public television channel in Ecuador waving guns and explosives during a live broadcast Tuesday, and the president issued a decree declaring that the South American country had entered an “internal armed conflict.”

The men armed with pistols and what looked like sticks of dynamite entered the set of the TC Television network in the port city of Guayaquil and shouted that they had bombs. Noises similar to gunshots could be heard in the background. It was not immediately clear if any station personnel were injured. Alina Manrique the head of news for TC Television, said she was in the control room, across from the studio, when the group of masked men entered the building. One of the men pointed a gun at her head and told her to get on the floor, Manrique said.

Ecuador had declared a state of siege just before the incident, with everything closed from 11 PM to 5 AM. All shopping centers are closed, and non-essential businesses are closed or doing limited daytime hours. The country's legislative body approve what is essentially a "shoot to kill" permission for soldiers to employ against drug traffickers.

The military took command of the streets and public facilities. Past leaders like 5-term Guayaquil mayor Jaime Nebot have declared support for the move of President Noboa.

Price gouging has been prohibited, but my daughter says it is concurring anyway.

Note: My oldest daughter and her family lives in Quito. Nebotwas my partner in 3 stations in that country.

Not surprised. I have traveled to many countries around the world. Ecuador was one of the least safe countries I have ever been to, and my least favorite. Fellow travelers warned it's not a question of if, but when, we would be robbed there...and sure enough, we were.

Which Noboa? The current president or the longtime mayor?

Other than all this, it's a safe country to live and a relaxing place to vacation. ;)

My daughter has sent her two kids to live in Spain. The situation is horrendous.

Can the UN send peacekeeping forces in, or not?
No. This is a law-and-order issue, not a revolution or attempt to take over the government. Ecuador has an army that is being used to control the violence and the gangs. It just needed a president who would declare a state of emergency to suspend certain rights to allow for more authoritarian law enforcement.

Read Medafrog's excellent link. As someone with friends and family in Ecuador, I can say that the article is very accurate.
