Article Asserts WFAN AM WIll Carry CBS Sports Radio Next January

An article by Jerry Barmash in the blog, "Tuned In" makes the claim that the WFAN FM/AM simulcast will be broken early next year, and that the AM signal will be used for carriage of CBS' Sports Radio network.
The article states, "A person close to the situation cautions the switch is tentative." Much of the rest of the article explores some of the complex calculations that may be in play in making such a decision.

WFAN AM Changing Next January? http://newyorkmedia.wordpress.com/2...ary-660-format-for-cbs-sports-radio/#more-198

Actually, CBS has been clearing CBS Sports Network on WCBS-FM-HD3 since it launched.

A lot can happen between now and January. As I've said, making 100% of the money from original programming, even if it's duplicated on FM, is better than making 50% of a syndicated sports network that is bound to attract fewer listeners than what 660 gets now. The "network honchos" the article talks about don't work for CBS Radio. CBS doesn't have a radio network. This CBS sports network is syndicated by Cumulus. They are the ones responsible for affiliations. Then you have all the teams that have deals with WFAN. They would have to approve, because this is basically changing the terms of their deal.

And yes I know they didn't buy an FM frequency to duplicate what's on the AM. But the cumulative ratings make them #1 in NYC. FM only won't. CBS has no problem with duplicating formats, as they prove with WINS and WCBS. If they make money, it doesn't matter.

The wild card here is what happens if Cumulus buys (as has been rumored) some CBS Radio stations? That could happen in 2014.

Like hell CBS is going to sell any of its NYC properties to Cumulus.

Meanwhile, WFAN is holding an "FM Means Free Money" phone contest, and the other message board is asserting that it's likely being done to raise awareness of the FM signal since the AM station will likely be turned into CBSSR or something else.
