Country and Rock are over-rated in LA and many other places in the country. NYC and Los Angeles will not be the only ones that drop the redneck and rock culture. Country music artists sound the same. Rock, ironically is much that way as too many artists sound the same.
Um, over-rated? Actually, they're getting, and in KZLA's case got ratings, they just weren't very high. The truth is exactly what you read in that article. Not enough whites living in LA to support the format. Though Country CD sales in LA would seem to run counter to that. As for Rock, same thing. Rock acts sell out in LA, but there's just one Classic Rocker and then there's KROQ and to a lesser extent STAR. Go to markets in the Midwest and east where the ethnic shift is to more whites and there are plenty of Rock stations that do well. It's a cultural thing. Mexicans fresh from Mexico don't listen to Country or Rock, and since they now outnumber the whites that do in LA and many other markets, the Rock & Country formats fail to attract large numbers. But their smaller audiences are loyal. Lets not forget the way Arbitron works. That's been helping the Spanish stations to a degree for some time now. I 'm a white male who never cared for Country, but I love Rock and still listen. I'm a minority and that's the reality of it. By the way, I wouldn't classify Country listeners as "rednecks". Besides being a derogatory term, it just isn't true. Many Country listeners are anything but rednecks. I don't understand the appeal of Hip Hop at all, but I don't deride it or it's listeners...
