AT&T U-Verse Threatening to Pull AMC, IFC and WE Off-Air by Wednesday

Yep, it is another round of contract disputes, this time between AT&T U-Verse and Rainbow Media properties AMC, IFC and WE.

From Deadline Hollywood,

AT&T and Rainbow had been negotiating unsuccessfully for the past six months on a new contract to replace their previous one, which expired on July 1. The two sides agreed to a two-week extension but are now at an impasse.

Basically the story is old how nether side is playing fair, etc.

Perhaps it's just a coincidence this dispute is happening right before the season premier of Mad Men.

Perhaps it's an even bigger coincidence that Rainbow Media is owned by Cablevision.

Gee, I wonder how many areas served by AT&T's "U-Verse" (what a silly name) is also served by Cablevision's Optimum...

Not too many, if any. U- verse is available only in some areas where AT&T operates the local land-line telephone service (the video service is transmitted over the telphone lines) almost entirely in the southeast, where as Cablevision operates in the NYC area. Cablevision's real threat is Verizon's FIOS service.

SBC bought SNET before merging with (and becoming) AT&T, so they're also in Connecticut.

And are any of them worth watching?
AMC American Movie Classics (This channel is TCM's most direct competitor & the biggest of the trio)

IFC Independent Film Classics (Says it all right there)

WE Women's Entertainment (Says it all right there. This channel is like Lifetime, another channel not too many people would miss if it were to go as well)

Cheers :D

AMC is not classic anything and sure the hell ain't TCM's competitor. It's 2010. I hardly call movies from 2004 - 6 years ago classic. Plus AMC shows commercials and TCM doesn't.

IFC - No comments.

As for WE - They show The Locator - a show that reunites lost loved ones with one another. A good show. If this were to affect me that would be the only show on WE that I'd miss. They also show The Golden Girls, which if WE disappeared wouldn't be a big loss since it's also on The Hallmark Channel. They also show reruns of The Ghost Whisperer. Again not a big loss since ION also airs that show. And their other programming isn't exactly setting the world on fire either - reruns of 48 Hours and 20/20. And they throw Sunday away with Bridal crap every week.

I would think that as well, except that my co-worker had to dump his cable and go to FIOS when they bumped Lifetime onto a premium tier (because his spouse was addicted to Army Wives)

Just because males might not miss Lifetime, the ratings are quite clear it serves an audience that values it (and WE has been making inroads). Assuming the world at large follows just one group's tastes tends to undercut the validity of many arguments.

Well, I'm sure your input matters to them, what with you being in their target demo and all...
