This is a very well breaking-it-down post here full of nerdy geeky information for huge broadcasting nerds like myself. I..... love it! Thanks for this.

All of the duopolies will be together which is kinda nice... KMCI/KSHB on KMCI's signal, KCTV/KSMO and KMBC/KCWE on KSMO's signal. Its VERY well planned out here.

I thought that the video and audio codecs in ATSC 3.0 would allow more than 4 HDTV programs/6MHz signal (with minimal picture degradation).

I asked in the local Best Buy if they would put up an outside antenna to receive the new format broadcasts (on some of their high end Sony/LG/Samsung TVs), once the signals are OTA, I plan to stop in and ask them again.

They probably could get more channels on the signals, however there is probably some other reason why they aren't including the subchannels, LPTV stations, or main channels of the other full-power TV stations on the ATSC 3.0 signals yet.
From what I understand, any kind of UHF TV antenna will be able to pick up these ATSC 3.0 signals. I also understand that the resolution of the video streams will, for now, be 1080p, with WDAF-TV's remaining in 720p.

To me, KCPT broadcasting in ATSC 3.0 on KMCI's signal was a big surprise.

It's been a long time since 1 ATSC 1.0 signal used 2 different (PSIP) channel numbers (in the KC area), IIRC, the last time was when KMBC DTV was on ch 7 (not at full power) and used the 2nd (sub)channel of KCWE [29.2] labeled as 9.3 to retransmit 9.1.

At the time, I didn't have an STB that displayed the actual RF ch, so I was puzzled at to why 9.3 had a much better signal than 9.1.

It was on March 3, 2009 when KCWE switched the feed from KMBC to This TV & the virtual channel from 9.3 to 29.2.
The funny thing is that, I think, up until a few years ago, some online TV listings still showed a KMBC 9.3.

Yes some do and one shows Charge as one of TV25-KSKC-LD channels and one Jewelry TV a Sub Channel on Telemundo station.
Hopefully gets Court TV Mystery,TBD and so on CCI,Sprectrum and so on. Also the Grio,DABL,Cozi TV,Circle and so on CCI.

How's the HDTV picture quality [ATSC 3.0 vs. ATSC 1.0], (KMBC still converts the 720p from ABC to 1080i)?

Kirk Bayne

I did notice some low video data rate picture artifacts on MeTV (watched live) since KMBC added 2 more subchannels, but since I videotape what I want to see using VHS SLP, the artifacts are usually lost in the poor resolution (I also watch on a 19" CRT TV wo/comb filter) [yes, I'm very old school].

Kirk Bayne

And technically KMBC is just hosting those 2 extra Sub channels but know if they added before Heroes and Icons or Estella TV or Shop LC that other Hearst stations have then maybe.
