ATTANTION: IF you are thinking of applying in KNOXVILLE OR PELLA!!

I was sent an 'invitation' to apply for KNIA/KRLS in Knoxville/Pella. Now this man has more job postings in the last 6 years than most of us have underwear. I told him 'no' and he replied

I learned a long time ago, that if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything.
I have many wonderful staff, who have been with me from 10 to 28 years.
But yes, we do have some turn over, and I hope to correct that.

He has more staff that has been there less than 10 years then damn near ANY station in Iowa.
Stay away from this property!

I used to work there and at was definately not my favorite job. They do have a ton of employees come and go because they hated it. There are a few good people that are caught there because of their contract but i would NEVER reccomend working there.....EVER

This station just needs a major over haul. Obviously their employees are unhappy, and that is not something that boils down to the jocks. If that many people come and go all the time and they have so many bad things to say about the station, perhaps they need to get a different GM in there taking care of things. It is very much an unpleasant place to work, and some of their demands of the job are a little far fetched... I just think that they need to sort of re-evaluate what exactly they are trying to do there....For one thing, when you hire someone as a DJ or whatever, that is their job. We aren't janitors and gophers....That was an issue I had there....I understand that the employees need to have a common goal to do well for the station, but there you very much get the feeling that you don't matter, and they have no problem telling you that you are replaceable. Perhaps that is why they burn through so many employees....the moral at that station is terrible....everyone, and I mean everyone that I worked with complained about how unhappy they were there, but with their ridiculous non-compete, they were stuck....Oh, and I didnt meet a single person who had been working at KNIA KRLS for more than 2 or 3 years, not 10 to 28...what a joke.... :-\

I interviewed there with Mr Suhr many years ago. It was one of only two stations that I've intervieed at, where I got up in the middle of the interview and told the interviewer, "Thanks, but no thanks" and left. You should have seen the look on his face... priceless.

I interviewed there 2 years ago. I could not get out of there fast enough. They had 3 openings and about to have a 4th when I applied. I did not like Mel, swore like 10 times in our interview, unprofessional! I see they have another ad at the Iowa Broadcasters site......RUN THE OTHER WAY!

I've seen several openings posted there and wondered what was going on.... I also found out they pay less then average even for small market.

Thanks for fillin' in the gaps of knowledge folks!

Little Melvin was and apparently still is a jealous, prima donna who apparently thinks he walks a few feet above everyone else.

Little Melvin's legacy? A station where nobody can keep a job and nobody wants to work.

Great job, little boy!

Hey Rockbottom.....

You say during an interview with Little Melvin he swore ten times? Is that right? I wonder if that's a requirement to be a Lector at his Lutheran Church. What do you think?

His son did not swear it was Mel who swore. I am not a prude who can't handle a few curse words but If you can't go more than 5min without throwing out profanity's in what is supposed to be a professional setting, (a job interview) then you have little if any self control. Mel went on and on about the lazy good for nothing people he hired, but did not know where I was coming from when I brought up the fact that he was the one who continued to hire these people and must share some of the responsibility. I interviewed in Wash before going on to Knoxville and the staff there made several excuses for Mel's behavior which of course set off a red flag in my mind! I liked Wash, looked like a nice town but no way would I ever want to work for that guy!

I worked for Mel in Washington for 1 1/2 years, and I have to say, thanks to him being so far away, normally, it wasn't too bad. I was young, inexperienced and learned a lot. Most of what I learned from him and his company was how NOT to treat people and the negative impact of not respecting employees. We went through 22 people the 18 months that I was there. Mostly sales staff, but we did go through a few GM's, GSM's and Jocks as well. I was the PD there and was told many, many lies and had to do some of the engineering myself, because Mel was too cheap to fix stuff. He's a self-involved hippocrit that only thinks about what he wants, not what the people listening to his station want and need. Dr. James Dobson was a huge program for him. Not for his listeners or what was good for the station, but for Mel. Since he liked it, he thought everyone should.

They are at it again.....on the Iowa Broadcasters board Mel and Crew are looking for a sports guy and sales people. You talk about a revolving door!
