Audio: 98.7 Kiss-FM's Final Day and 1050 ESPN's Transition To 98.7 ESPN

And here's the first 100 minutes or so of the final installment of Bob Slade's "Week In Review" - a special extended two-hour version, preceded by the close of Al Sharpton's show in which he bids adieu to 98.7 Kiss-FM.

Thanks for this one! I do have the entire 2 hours of the last "Week in Review" show ever on "Kiss-FM". It has the final moments of the station and then the last song was played was "Brothers Gonna Work It Out" by Willie Hutch from "The Mack" soundtrack, the stream cuts off in the middle of the song, so I put them together to get the full song. It was an emotional end to the station after 30+ years.

I also have another aircheck on cassette is the launch of ESPN Radio on 98.7 as simulcast on 1050 and it will stay until this fall when it becomes a Spanish sports station as ESPN Deportes will begin. The aircheck is kinda fuzzy, because I live in Kingston which is part of the Hudson Valley, and I can get ESPN Radio at night in many area and it's a 50,000 watt flamethrower. You can hear static during the launch, so I'll have to post it soon. In the meantime. I'll post more from the last days of "Kiss-FM" later this week.

When I was listening to that final moments of the station, it's like when WABC ended it's music format and flipped to talk. That was 30 years ago on 5/10/82, and also, it's like when WNBC ended in October 1988 and becomes WFAN where Alan Combs did their final farewell to the station after 66 years, and finally, it's like the end of WHN at 1050 where it flipped from country to sports as the original WFAN. Those were the good old days. And now, 30 years later, it did.

...Stephen A. is on until 2am ET.

Correction: after the opening hour on 98.7 FM, Stephen A. has been relieved by Dave Rothenberg at 1 am ET.
Dave's been promoted from weekends/fill-ins to weeknights 6-9pm ET.

The Kiss Web Site is now Streaming WBLS audio. Its now looks like the WBLS site except for some differences on the home page. While basically promoting WBLS it at least lets the Kiss Listners know what's going on. Here are the links to Both Sites.

I Guess The New owners of WBLS will keep the Kiss website up for a while since they now own the
Kiss Branding or Property.

The stereo light/symbol still lights up on my receivers, so...they're in stereo.

I just listened to some commercials and bumper music and it sounds as if the feed is in mono (even on my HD receiver)...need to check again a few more times to confirm this.

One of the ESPN NY Radio promos has game clips from the Jets, Knicks + Rangers and mentions "hearing the games in stereo", thus they'll be keeping the stereo signal, unlike WEMP.

If miked properly, the game-casts can sound pretty good in stereo.

I do understand the argument about "extending" the signal (or at least having it be a little clearer in fringe areas and diminishing multipath/picket-fencing problems) by broadcasting in mono like WEMP 101.9 does.

I think it's great they will be keeping the stereo. WFAN used to broadcast in AM Stereo. Don't know if they still do as I no longer have an Am stereo Radio. Hearing the games in stereo on espn might be pretty cool.

I have made some changes to my HD radio presets (allows me up to 20 AM and 20 FM) And ESPN 98-7 is among them. Got up early this morning and did a scan for 98.7...sure enough ESPN Radio. And it will be kind of cool to hear the Rangers and Knicks in FM. In my car I will also add 98.7 and I'll see if it comes on in stereo.

If you piece together the two final airchecks I posted, you'll still have the entire "Week In Review" program, albeit without most of the final commercial break.

We'll it's been a week of posting and recording airchecks of the final 2 days of "Kiss-FM" 98.7 last weekend, so I decided to go back and post a couple of last shows that are on 98.7. Here they are.

Here is Bugsy doing his final show on WRKS' "Kiss-FM" from last Saturday started at the 3 PM slot, this one is in 2-parts.

And then, Cocoa Chanelle at the 8 PM hour hosting the final 2 hours of "Ladies Night" on "Kiss-FM" last week.

After that, at the 10 PM hour, Cool DJ Red Alert doing his final show on "Kiss-FM" last Saturday with the "Thank You Mixtape" where it has disco and hip-hop classics rolled into one. Many of you people who posted on one of the threads, so here it is once again!

At Midnight, WRKS "Kiss-FM" also did an all-night live show at a club in New Jersey where they did their final show for two hours with DJ Qua on the turntables. Along with that including Lenny Green, Sheila, and a few others from the station who throws out a farewell party. This aircheck was edited, because the stream when I was using TuneIn app cuts off in the middle, so I decided to edited out for most of the aircheck. Here it is.

At 2 AM, WRKS also did their final show on "Kiss-FM" called "Kiss Club Classics" and it continued to party until 4:30 AM. This aircheck was heavily edited, because it ran out of tape while I was sleeping, I got up at 4:15 AM to check to see if the tape ran out and turned it over and hear the last minutes of the final "Kiss Club Classics" show. Here it is.

The next day, 10 AM, Bob Slade and the rest of the gang hosted the last "Open Line" show on "Kiss-FM" 98.7, it was a call-in talk show where it was about what was going on the urban community. On this final "Open Line", they were talking about WRKS "Kiss-FM" and the station that has been part of NY radio for 30 years. The guests on that show are Lenny Green, Sheila, Bugsy and the rest of the crew talks about the history of the station and the ratings. Enjoy it in 2 parts.

Part 2: http://www.mediafire.com/?uvmbi7a33cqzoka

After that special "Open Line" show, it's time for Felix Hernandez at the 1 PM hour for his final "Rhythm Revue" show on "Kiss-FM" last Sunday. This is the complete show in 2-parts, one of the people who posted the last 45 minutes of the final show is in better quality, but this one is the entire 4-hour show with some edits. Felix Hernandez will also be heard on WBLS starting tomorrow at noon right before Hal Jackson and the "Sunday Classics" show, and also heard Saturdays at 10 AM on WBGO. Enjoy while you can.

Part 2: http://www.mediafire.com/?b7tpxf24avt5tie

And then, Andre Harrel also did his final show for "Kiss-FM" entitled "Bubbles & Champagne" playing all your favorite slow jams past and present. This was heard during the 6 PM hour and this one is his last show. Enjoy!

And finally, who will never forget, the entire final 2 hours of 98.7 "Kiss-FM" and it was in the 9 PM hour where Bob Slade hosted a special "Week in Review" show, and "Soul Beginnings" has preempted because it was also the last show a week prior to this one. The rest of the Kiss-FM gang came back once again and reflecting back on the station for the last 30 years and giving phone calls and saying their final goodbyes. The last song that it was played on that station was like I said "Brother's Gonna Work It Out" by Willie Hutch. I tried to recorded the last song, and the stream just cut off, so I have the same song and I finally pieced together to make it the final farewell to the station with the full song with just 15 seconds of blank at the end. No station launch at all. Here it is.

Meanwhile, on the AM side, WEPN at 1050 ran a promo on ESPN Radio will be moving to 98.7 in just 25 minutes away. This was from last Sunday night while I was recording the last hour of "Kiss-FM" before the flip. This was recorded on AM, due to popular demand, it contains the last 25 minutes of the "Baseball Tonight" post-game show where the Devil Rays played against the Rangers, and after that, you'll hear the launch of ESPN Radio 98.7 where it will be simulcasting on 1050 AM, and you can hear static during the launch. There is a better quality version of the same launch can be found in the Format Change Archive site. The reason why is that 1050 had a better signal in all surrounding areas including the Hudson Valley listening area. I live in Kingston, NY where I can get ESPN Radio at 1050 AM in the daytime and even at night, the signal is 50,000 watts and it goes into Poughkeepsie and Kingston, as you known, Kingston is 90 miles north of the city. ESPN Radio will still be around at 1050 until it will become ESPN Deportes Radio 1050 this fall. Here it is.
