Hudson Valley AUDIO: WGNY’s “Oldies 98.9” - 9/22/24 - 9/26/24

I want to thank Graeme Gigante for posting these four airchecks from WGNY’s “Oldies 98.9”, and this goes back to a few weeks ago, while WGHQ’s former “Magic 92.5” was in its final weeks as an soft oldies station. Last week, WGHQ flipped to a conservative talk format known as “The Beacon”, they lost a huge chunk of listeners to “Oldies 98.9”, and now, WGNY is making a direct competitor to its rival WBPM. They dropped the pre-1964 oldies and replaced with post-1964 oldies, and added “Hudson Valley Mornings” with Bob O, John Roberts and Rose Tamerino, you know them as “The Three Stooges” like Moe, Larry & Curly did, and added some 80’s music to the mix, and no 50’s and early 60’s on there.

You should applaud WKNY for doing a sensational job doing an oldies show on Saturday afternoons with Warren Lawrence, and on WABC on Saturday nights with Vinnie Medugno, Cousin Brucie and Tony Orlando, they all did a tremendous job of keeping the oldies alive on Saturday.

Like I said, WGHQ lost all of its listeners last week to go to the other stations, but they’re not staying on WKXP’s “Lite-FM at 94.3, they’re not staying on WRNQ’s “Q92” at 92.1, they’re now staying on WBPM, they’re now going to WGNY’s “Oldies 98.9”.

And like I was saying, soft oldies is a dying format. Let’s take a listen to these four shows, including Bob Corsino, and one of the worst DJ’s of all-time, Caroline Barton. I hate her so much, and that’s why I flipped to Jimmy Howes over at WALL.

What do you think?

Why do you hate Caroline Barton?
Because she horrible, according to the aircheck I listened to. So I ended up listening to Jimmy Howes over at its other station WALL.

Trust me! Jimmy Howes is still a funny guy doing evening ms from 7-10PM and then JJ Carter from 10PM to midnight on WBPM. Both shows are way better than Caroline Barton.

You post several statements supposedly factual inside information , just one week after the flip of Pamala's flip of three AM on FM stations. How did you scoop up all this information ?

I don’t have any inside baseball. WGNY’s “Oldies 98.9” is now grabbing all of its listeners from the demise of WGHQ’s “Magic 92.5” last week, and it needs some gain to boost up the ratings, and I hope the next Poughkeepsie fall ratings book will come out by January. This is just my prediction on what’s going to happen in 2025 when WGNY is going to become the #1 oldies station in the Hudson Valley beating WBPM following WGHQ’s demise. Most of its listening audience were listening to WKXP’s “Lite-FM” at 94.3, and WRNQ’s “Q92” at 92.1 did grabbed half of its listeners from WGHQ’s demise on 92.5.

I have more Hudson Valley radio predictions might follow in 2025.

Hurry with the posts. I'm at the edge of my seat in danger of falling off into the abyss where oldies radio stations lie

I’m not gonna lie, and speaking of WGNY’s “Oldies 98.9”, there are other alternatives to listen to besides this one. You’ve got Rewound Radio, they’re playing oldies with a massive music playlist and lots of forgotten 45’s and songs that you haven’t heard in a very long time. And of course, there’s a TuneIn app where I’ll be using it to listen to a multitude of stations, and of course, there’s SiriusXM where listeners can listen to “50’s Gold”, “60’s Gold”, “70’s on 7”, “The Blend”, and lots more which would bring most of its listeners from the demise of WGHQ’s “Magic 92.5”. This is why they chose streaming over terrestrial radio. I don’t listened to terrestrial radio most of the time, so TuneIn is the best one to listen to.

In their continuation to pay little attention to the stuff they spurt out into the airwaves, WGNY FM oldies 98.9 and all its associated translators are still including the recently separated am station in their promos and liners. Was it a secret that 1220 am was going to be split from the oldies mix to imitate a talk format? Was it a lack of detail from a broadcast group that pays little to no attention to their product? Or are things bad enough that the can't get a few dollars together to have the liners recut? Thoughts?
