Audio: WYNY Transition To WKTU - February 5-10, 1996

A lot of you may have heard the audio of WYNY's sign-off back on February 4, 1996.

You may have heard of the sign-on (that is, the rebirth) of WKTU, exactly seventeen years ago today.

But nobody's ever put together a composite of the stations that were simulcast on 103.5 FM in New York in that timeframe... until now.

From Mancow and Bonaduce in Chicago to Matty in Boston and everything in between (traffic reports for New York from San Francisco!), it's all in one 54-minute file for your listening pleasure.

We still did not hear the final song played on WYNY both live the evening before or their last actual song played at the end of the format was After Midnight ended right before 6 AM. I have the tape of their final half hour as a Country music station and their first 2 songs simulcasting Rock 103.5. It cuts off during the second song so I am unsure how soon after that, Mancow began his show. So I am missing the beginning of the Mancow Muller Simulcast. I have WYNY from 530 AM to about 605 AM that morning. I then have the initial sign of of WKTU. So this aircheck still leaves a few holes.

Cool! If you have an aircheck of WYNY's last day as a country station and the official sign on of KTU, please post. I'm happy to hear you.

At the beginning of that aircheck I've just heard that country listeners of the old WYNY would tuned to "Country 740" in Long Island. 740 AM has been running its country format for years, but it's now a Spanish Christian station.
 
Here is an aircheck of the launch of WKTU back in 1996 after a series of stunting of using other stations elsewhere like Chicago, San Francisco, Boston and a few others, it ended with just a series of heartbeat sounds and the launch of the new station. "DToTheJ" would love to hear this one, but the first half of that aircheck on its first post has some minor flaws at the start and missing the final hour of WYNY and the launch of WKTU, but it's good to hear this once again! Let's relived once again!

And here is a little taste of WYNY during its last days as a country station. This was recorded 4 days prior to the stunting and the launch of WKTU which was 5 days later. This is from 2/1/96 where WYNY made an announcement on the format change.

I have their final mhour as a country station somewhere on cassette tape. Will try to post it some day but its a tough process. I have to record it onto CD from cassette and then put it into the computer. But I will look into doing it in the future if someone else has not already posted it. I would think someone else has a tape of this.
 
I know this was posted a while ago but thanks for that upload. Great post! Do you have a un scoped version of WKTU from when they first signed on? Thanks!
