Austin 99.7 FM ends the "HIP HOP" at 3pm and goes "News Talk"

On this day Hip Hip died at 99.7 FM and Austin's first True News Talk FM was born.

Simulcast of KLBJ-AM. It's a preemptive strike to protect its local sports talk shows from ESPN Austin's move to FM on Monday. The legal ID is kinda clutzy with both KLBJ and K259AJ worked in.

Fred...KLBJ AM does not have any local sports show to protect. The clutzy legal id is required and will probably change...

What about Jeff Ward & Ed Clements plus the Longhorn game day broadcasts. KLBJ has a reputation in this market for sports even though they don't carry the games themselves.

Fred,
One local talk show for one hour in the evening that leans sports is in itself a reason to put a programming stream on an FM translator, when the AM class B station is doing just fine? Weak logic. There must be other reasons.

Dremographics. All over the US leading AM news talk stations are moving to FM or adding an FM simulcast. This is because the sales demos of under-55 don't use much AM, and when FM is dadded, the 25-54 numbers jump. Even though KLBJ is doing pretty well in 25-54, being first on FM will guarantee that position.

This is not the first true FM new talk in Austin. That honor goes to KJFK 98.9 back in the day. It proves nothing. Further, the KLBJ 99.7 translator is essentially a LPFM.

Indeed...it's stick is way out by KAKW TV and we all know how well THAT penetrates into Austin. I can just get them here at Steck & MoPac.

But as I remember, they used to! I wonder if the FM is the first step in KLBJ making another run at the UT broadcasts?

I must correct myself, KJFK was on the Bertram tower back then and had a dreadful signal. The signal from the 2222/620 site is now much improved.

Maybe, but it won't be anytime soon. The Clear Channel contract with UT runs through mid 2015.

I just listened to it from Buda to Round Rock. Only minor, half-second points of static. Almost completely clear as a bell. It's no KASE101, but what do you expect out of a 250W coffee pot? As for being just an LPFM, the tower location in West Lake, on the mountain, is serving Austin proper just fine and I'm sure that's the point.

Hmmm....I used radio-locator.com and that's where I got the info that their transmitter was way out northwest. If indeed they're in Westlake Hills, they should indeed cover Austin decently.

The problem is not in cars, it's in penetrating homes and buildings outside of downtown Austin.
