Austin - My Home Town song (KNOW radio 1961)

Lisa

Nice site. I saw the article in the Statesman and went right to the site.

I used to have a bunch of those LPs WOR FM, WIBG and others.

I put quick piece about the site on my blog.

I'm curious who the jocks are that are listed on the WWRL LP?

i thought it was a great article myself. i remember some of the stations in 70's- 90's, like koke-fm, keyi 103.5 z 102, 107.7 the hawk, mix 93.3, fox 96.5, kool 99, and the stations songs or promotions with those stations.
thanks captex.

If there are ANY records I am missing from Austin/San Antonio radio stations (check both the albums and 45 pages of the site), PLEASE let me know. I don't need to physically own them, so you don't have to part with them - however a nice, high rez picture would be great.

Thanks in advance!

Oh my GOSH, Lisa, I remember actually hearing that on the radio here while growing up. I remember my mother saying she hated it! ;D But it was so early 60s Austin. What else can you say about a "city" that couldn't even come up with song lyrics about itself without having to mention it's airport! :D

FYI-- KNOW's ''Austin My Home Town'' song ran as late as the mid 1980s. The KNOW calls were already gone when 1490 was oldies as ''KNOW 1490.'' You had to listen to the legal ID carefully to realize they were actually saying KMOW Austin. As an oldies station they ran a satellite format but used original KNOW jingles and the ''Austin My Home Town'' tune as a filler. I believe they dropped the oldies in 1986.

I had a copy of the "Austin, My Home Town" 45 back in the 60's. Mine was see-through orange vinyl, unlike the dark red vinyl used in most of the other copies I've seen. Both versions had the same orange label. Don't have it any more; I think I sold it or gave it away as part of my periodic purges of old records.

I've heard several different versions of the tune, customized for different markets. One of the British offshore broadcasters in the mid-60's used the theme as well.

Does anyone know if the WMCA Goodguys did their song on 45?

As I recall they did a number of different songs over the years.

Fred, I believe they brought the MOR format back to 1490 for while in the mid-90's because I seem to remember it was doing alright ratings wise, but Sales couldn’t convert it into dollars because it was very 55+ leaning. Shortly later, it switched to Sportsfan 1490, KFON. Again, I think this was all happening while 103.5 and 1490 were owned my Mercury, which was basically a CC holding company. And even in the 90's, they played the KNOW song and it was really neat to hear.
