Baja to the Canadian Rockies may soon be Hacksawless

Xtra Sports 570 is apparently moving legend Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton to weekends and daily updates only. They're keeping his Hottest Headlines, but at 4pm PT and having him do segments throughout the day.

Speculation on the LA board is that his contract is up at the end of the year and that he may jump to San Diego's Mighty 1090. Ever since Xtra moved from 690/1150 (690 being a flamethorwer in Mexico) to 570 their signal has been weak at best in San Diego and the Saw is a San Diego guy. Sad day. This guy really did his homework on national sports stuff and was compelling enough to listen to for someone out of market.

I was the one that mentioned the contractual status, I just rememeber reading from one of the papers about that. Replacing Hacksaw is one thing (and despite having his critics, he's damn good and respected at what he does), but whom he's being replaced with is a different matter. XTRA brought in two guys who did sports updates on two music stations in town. I just can't see how long Hacksaw's replacements will last there. Since Hacksaw is a San Diego guy (still lives and does his show from San Diego, despite being on a L.A.-cenrtic station), IF and when Hacksaw leaves (there's no real word on whether he is gone after this year), The Mighty 1090 might be the perfect place for him since a lot of former hosts from XTRA 690 have prominent spots there, plus the owner of 1090 started the sports format on 690 before Clear Channel took over.

Yea, since they moved to 570 I haven't been able to hear him up here in the bay area any more (or even Lancaster in the high desert for that matter) and I miss him. Hell, if he does go to the mighty 1090 (which makes perfect sense) I'll be able to hear him up here at night (assuming he's on in the evening).

Any word on his replacement(s)? They should give Vic the Brick his own show. :)<P ID="signature">______________

Well, when XTRA started its own L.A. station back in 1997 (1150 AM), they gave Vic the Brick his own show, and they intitally built the station around him and Jim Rome. Vic's show lasted a couple of years, and got "demoted" to updated guy and has now eased his way on to the Loose Cannons show. He and Joe Grande (one of the guys replacing Hacksaw) hosted a Sunday morning show about the Lakers last year.

The L.A. and San Diego papers each have stories about Hacksaw's new position with the station:

(San Diego) North County Times

Los Angeles Times

I may have jump the gun on his contractual status, but as part of his new role, he gets a 3-year extension, but a small cut in pay. But, I could still see Hacksaw ending up on 1090 sooner or later. The few times I've listened to 1090 lately, they could use the help.
