Bands you'd like to hear more/less of on 104.5

Since this new Radio 104.5 station claims to be "listener-driven" and wants you to "tell us about any indie or local bands you think we should play," let's use this thread to share what we think 104.5 should sound like.

Never mind that it's ClearChannel, never mind that the whole "you tell us what to play" bit indicates a half-assed approach to programming, and never mind that I believe that [email protected] is set up so that your emails go directly into their trash bin. Hit the list button here and share with us: Bands you'd like to hear MORE of, and Bands you'd like to hear LESS of.

Here's my short list, off the top of my head. Maybe when we've got a couple dozen replies, I'll edit the original post here and start to make a master list combined from all of ours.

Bands I'd like to hear less of on Radio 104.5:

  • Creed
  • U2
  • RHCP
  • Nirvana
  • Pearl Jam
  • Stone Temple Pilots
  • Linkin Park
  • Coldplay

Bands I'd like to hear more of on Radio 104.5
  • Arcade Fire
  • The White Stripes
  • Ted Leo & the Pharmacists
  • The Shins
  • Arctic Monkeys
  • Modest Mouse
  • The Walkmen
  • OK GO
  • Cake

And since as one poster suggested, people within CC read these boards, it would be a good idea to start a thread here about this topic... Although as far as "editing your original post": there is a 15-minute window in which you can modify your posts, which has now passed as of this posting.

I'm not one of those people who believes that CC is reading these boards -- and if they are, I don't believe they're taking it seriously.

So nevermind about editing the OP -- thanks for the heads up -- are you gonna post your list?

Personally, with everyone under American Idol's spell, it would bode well for them to keep high rotation on the alumni that fit the format, i.e. Daughtry, Bo Bice, and if he puts out an album, Blake Lewis.

I agree with the public opinion that Creed has pretty much run its course as an alternative artist. Leave them to the rock-leaning CCM-ers.

Please allow me to sample the station more to give you an idea of what other artists should comply.

Less:

Nickelback
Evanescence
Daughtry

Sonic Youth
Tool
Deftones
System Of A Down
Arctic Monkeys
Arcade Fire
Kings Of Leon
Bloc Party

Overall, Radio 104.5 sounds like a safer version of G Rock in Monmouth/Ocean (imagine that). They have played some songs that G Rock won't touch (Bush's "Mouth", Bloodhound Gang's "Fire Water Burn") but overall the playlist reads like the biggest Modern Rock hits of the past 15 years with a few Hot AC Currents thrown in. It's early yet - I hope they will find their sound and it won't be where they are now, which is basically Max 95.7 circa 2007.

More:

Pixies/Frank Black

Beastie Boys (not just "Licensed To Ill")
B-52's (not just "Love Shack")

Screaming Blue Messiahs (OK...a personal fave....)

As much as I agree with all of you, I say good luck trying to get this through the thick skulls at Clear Channel.

Captain Obvious: Does WCHE have a webcast? I'll have to check it out.

Also, check out Clear Channel owned WTKS ( http://www.wtks.com ) when you get the chance. It broadcasts out of Cocoa Beach, FL and serves the Orlando area. After 11 PM on weekdays and all weekend they play a surprisingly good Alternative Rock mix. This gives me a glimmer of hope that CC is capable of a decent station with this format, but more often than not they miss the mark. Radio 104.5 can't possibly stay with this sound - too many repeats and not nearly enough Currents. No doubt that it will evolve, but what it will evolve into remains to be seen.

Indeed they do:
mms://72.94.56.234:8080

Remember they are a daytimer. They are also "where the static is". ;D

OK. I'll bite on this thread. I haven't had the most time to listen to the station though, but I've looked at the playlist online. Now this is me and my personal tastes... not as to who they should be targeting or who they are trying to target. Just greedy me and what I like.

Less:

Creed
Nickelback
Marilyn Manson

More:

Better Than Ezra
Tonic
O.A.R.
Third Eye Blind
Plain White T's
Jimmy Eat World

Soundgarden
Smashing Pumpkins

Add in:
Something Corporate/Jack's Mannequin
Taking Back Sunday
Dashboard Confessional
Nine Days

I like their mix so far... the 90s stuff sounds GREAT. I keep saying this... but I'm interested to see where this expands to.

They do live streaming. As far as the webcasts. They will take certain parts of the morning show, and add them to thier podcast page, but not the whole show.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't read page 2 before I posted this. Thanks DToTheJ

I actually agree with "Run With Scissors"?? Who'd have thunk it? (except the Rage thing, and I'd say O.K. to U2 (as long as it's early U2).

In the end variety is key (Alt of all flavors). Avoid Hair Bands/Mullet Rock/Classic Rock. No Hot AC. Be different. Ruffle a few feathers. Play something we've never heard. Make us say "Wow!" (or even occasionally WTF was that?).

See a trend here? It generally points to wanting less of the third-rate grunge copycats, power balladeers and pseudo-punk boy bands, and more post-punk, new wave Alternative and thinking man's alt-metal.

Radio 104.5 will evolve, and hopefully it will become something along these lines. The acts that the consensus wants less of can be heard several other places anyway, so they won't be missed. So long as the station doesn't try too hard to win over frat boys and teenyboppers, it will be good.

So I am guessing KISS, Poison, Def Leppard, Warrant, Winger, Kix, Living Colour, Guns and Roses are out of this new station then? ;D
