Barney Pip Aircheck on WPIX-FM 1972 Parts 1 and 2

Barney didn't sound like he was at the top of his game on this aircheck.
...in fact, on FM he sounds almost like Scott Ferral doing a '70s Top 40 show, a far cry from his WCFL and WOKY days...radioman148 said:
I agree with the previous statement that he was not at the top of his game here. I've heard some WCFL airchecks on reelradio.com, and remember hearing him on CFL when I was stationed there in the Navy 1968. Am I correct that a few years after this, he was on a station in Montgomery, Alabama ... a much smaller market after being in Chi and NYC.

I listened to Pip last night and was truly amazed how bad he sounded. I guess he was at the top of his game when at WCFL in the 60's. What a great talent he was here in Chicago and so sad to hear that awful sound check. Usually, DJ's get better with time...so what happen to Barney?
If you read some of the previous posts that I have written about Barney Pip, you will learn some of the answers to your questions listed above. In addition to that, here are a few reasons why Barney didn't sound the same in New
York versus Chicago. Barney had to run his own board at WPIX-FM. Barney didn't have to run his own board at WCFL because of AFTRA and NABET. Barney ran his own board poorly. Barney was much better with a board engineer. Barney also used to answer tons of listener phone calls both at WPIX-FM and WCFL but, it made him
sloppy when he ran his own board at WPIX-FM. He didn't have to worry about any records fading out at WCFL with his board engineer. There were also a few other reasons. Barney was the music director of WPIX-FM and
sometimes the record promotion men would come up to the studio which would also distract him. There was always a lot going on at WPIX-FM when Barney was on the air.
