Baseball On FM And AM: Phillies Games To Air On 94 WIP and 1210 WPHT

I wonder what's going to happen when the Flyers, Sixers, make the playoffs while the Phillies season is starting, how will CBS radio handle this?

Flyers on 610, Sixers on 1210, Phillies on 94.1.
The bigger problem is what if all 3 teams have home games at the same time? That place will be a mess.

The Flyers and Sixers share the Wells Fargo Center.

Quite easily.

Warning...nostalgia ahead...

This trend has happened elsewhere already, but what often happens later is that the traditional 50kW stations that made for great summer evening listening across the country - because they aired baseball games - eventually no longer carry the games.

WSB in Atlanta no longer carries the Braves; WJR in Detroit no longer carries the Tigers...KDKA in Pittsburgh no longer carries the Pirates...as someone who did not live in a baseball city growing up (Buffalo, NY) I spent many a summer late evening with a transistor radio surreptitiously under my pillow listening to baseball.

Now I use my iPhone for that...

As far as I know, WCBS-AM 880 of New York City will still have the Yankees and WTIC-AM 1080 of Hartford will still have the Red Sox. Obviously, WTIC-AM isn't their flagship, but has been the only real clear channel on their network for years.

On a smaller note, the Hartford/New Britain/Middletown radio market had a recent move-in with 97.9 FM, which had been part of the Springfield, MA radio market. WPKX-FM 97.9 of Windsor Locks/Hartford, which has their transmitter atop City Place (across the street from the XL Center), is simulcasting WPOP-AM 1410, a.k.a. ESPN Radio. It's a safe bet that the Yankees, which have aired on WPOP-AM for years, will also be on the FM as well.

I'd love to see both the Flyers and Sixers have a home game at the same time! Who plays in the parking lot? Put the ice in the Linc? Set the hardwood up on the grass?

And a few Phillies playoff games have already been played at home the same date as an Eagles home game. I think twice it has happened. Nothing can compare to that time of traffic.

The same date, but not the same time. Usually one is at 1 p.m. and the other is at 8 p.m. or thereabout. Which is an issue for traffic but not for radio stations.

It all goes into the same pockets, so "who gets what" is kind of irrelevant.

What about the advertising dollars who gets what? Are they charging for two stations and HD?

I believe the Phillies purchase the airtime from the stations, then they sell the advertising themselves. So it all goes into one pocket - the Phillies' pocket.

I wonder if 94.1 will play all the pre/post game stuff, or if that will be 1210 exclusive. I know they generally go right into and out of flyers/sixers coverage for normal WIP programing, and Sundays Phillies baseball on WIP always just had to game. I think the eagles are the only ones who have maintained a postgame presences.

Betcha the whole salami (Phillies On Deck, Phillies Warmup, the Post Game) goes onto FM. Why on earth wouldn't they?

After all, 1210 isn't a sports station.

No, but it's a station that's been kept on life support by sports. ;)
