Baseball on Radio in the Age of Covid19

Major League Baseball will use recorded crowd noise to create some ambiance in the park and on broadcasts. This reminds me of the old ticker broadcasts. Radio stations, rather than pay the cost of sending an announcer to the out of town games and paying line charges, would recreate the game in their studio. Western Union “ticker” service sent a play by play account of the game over a ticker tape, similar to the system used for sending stock market quotations. An announcer in the studio used a collection of recorded crowd noises and a wood block for a hit to recreate the game. Tickers lasted into the 1950s, but I don’t recall hearing any. Does anyone recall any more ticker history?

Red Mottlow and Ronald Regan were among the last ticker announcers. Read more and hear a Mottlow

I remember some minor league teams using re-creations with ticker tape in the '60s, but nothing later.
