The Bay Area Radio Museum is proud to announce the sixteen newest members of the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame.

More than 6,000 votes were cast during the public voting, and a stellar group of legendary broadcasters has been chosen for induction as the Class of 2007:

  • Mike Cleary (KYA, KNBR)
  • Frank Cope (KJBS)*
  • Belva Davis (KSAN, KWBR, KDIA)
  • Jerry Dean (KJAZ)*
  • Jim Eason (KGO, KSFO)
  • Aaron Edwards (KSFO)
  • Bud Foster (Oakland Oaks, San Francisco 49ers)*
  • Bob Kieve (owner of KLIV, KARA, KRTY)
  • Ron Lyons (KEWB, KNEW, KNBR, KCBS)*
  • Franklin Mieuli (KHIP, Warriors, Giants and 49ers)
  • Don Mozley (KCBS)
  • Ronn Owens (KGO)
  • Carter B. Smith (KRE, KSFO, KNBR, Magic 61, KABL)
  • Ernie Smith (pioneer sportscaster, KYA, KFRC)*

The Class of 2007 will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during a special ceremony that will take place on Wednesday, December 12, at the Doubletree Inn on the Berkeley Marina in conjunction with Broadcast Legends. The event is open to the public, but advance reservations are required.

As of this morning, I understand that all of the honorees that are still with us will be in attendance, with the exception of Jim Eason, who is recovering from recent surgery, and Bob Kieve, who had a prior commitment.

The Class of 2007 features three longtime favorites who are still on the air: Don Bleu (Star 101.3), Ronn Owens (KGO Newstalk 810) and Mike Cleary (Magic 630 KIDD, Monterey). In addition, Belva Davis — who began her broadcast journalism career at the original KSAN (1450 AM) in 1956 and is currently with KQED-TV — is the longest-serving media personality currently active in the Bay Area, with more than fifty years of continuous service.

Kenny, we counted, re-counted, then counted again just for kicks. I close my eyes at night and still see the paper ballots and tally sheets flying by me...

John Mack and Bobby Ocean (Himself) got tons of support, as did several others, but this is our group for this year -- and a pretty amazing group it is.

There are several candidates that deserved greater support, but fell slightly short this time -- Doug Pledger, Terry McGovern, Dan Sorkin, Tom Campbell, Johnny Holliday, Gary Owens, Bill Gavin, Les Crane and Alex Bennett among them. Wait'll next year...

If someone was nominated for what they did for Bay Area radio Bill Gavin would already be there. His presence as an announcer might have been diminished by the fact that it has been 50 years since his "Lucky Lager Dancetime," left the air. But his contributions through his San Francisco-based Gavin Report and its conventions, as well as his saintly ethics would put most others already enshrined to shame.

The fact that he left and sold his Gavin Report nearly a quarter century ago at the age of 77 might make it hard for his name to rise above younger more current contenders for a seat at the table, but so much of what is good about San Francisco music radio has roots in what Bill Gavin did and didn't and what he stood for and against.

I would hope that future nominations take a deeper look at those, like Bill Gavin, who worked boldly, albeit quietly behind the scenes for the good of our community of radio.
 
All of those mentioned should get in at some point, but this is a very good class!! Look forward their being honored. Some people make a huge difference in a number of people's lives (I.E., surgeons that perform several thousand life saving surgeries over their careers), but others make a small difference in the quality of life of Hundreds of Thousands of people or even millions. Some of those people are the humble air personalities (yes, that's a JOKE about the humility, but not about how personalities have touched huge numbers of people and brightened their days over the years.)
 
Congratulations to Bob Kieve! To maintain local ownership in a market the size of San Jose is admirable. He's an owner who really does care about his product. My first paying radio news job was at KLIV/KARA back in the early 1980s...and, I understand Mr. Kieve still has the same energy and enthusiasm that he had 25+ years ago.

This is a very nice honor - I'm pleased to hear that Mr. Kieve is being recognized.

You do. There was a basic list of nominees, and each time a "write in" received a vote, he or she was added to the list. There were more than 6,000 votes cast during the online balloting, and perhaps another 500 or 600 paper ballots submitted during public events involving Broadcast Legends or the California Historical Radio Society.

The open voting was announced right here on this board. Bill Gavin was on the ballot.
