"BCE laying off 1,300 people and pulling plug on 9 radio stations across Canada" - CBC Canada

Not sure what the longevity will be for sports talk in Vancouver, either. Vancouver doesn't really seem to be recognized as a "sports town" compared to other cities. Other radio stations own the rights to other play-by-play broadcasts. If the Canucks decide to go a different direction, it could spell trouble.

At one point one could argue it's 2 1/2 sports stations in Toronto back when AM 640 had the hockey rights.
At least half their programming was very much in a sports talk direction.
I'm honestly not sure if they have any desire to go back down that road any time soon.
Toronto is the biggest city and the biggest market in Canada. Bell and Rogers jointly own MLSE owning almost every Toronto area team except for the Rogers owned Blue Jays. Also Toronto has 3 news radio stations plus CBC Radio One

What are those three...wait? Are you saying Newstalk 1010 is one of them?
Bell terminated 210 people and gutted that news room in the last round of cuts. (prior to the current 1,300)
680 is all news, while 640 tries to be news and talk,
but I believe NT1010 is stuck being just a talk station with some news input where they see fit.
The days of "News every 30 minutes, bulletins at once" seem to be dead thanks to all the cuts Bell keeps making.

And it wasn’t that long ago that CFRB was still using that liner…was pretty much the station slogan. How many years did they use it? Would hear that when listening via CFRX on shortwave.

I'm never listening to CFRB ever again! @ 3:30 today they went to traffic, then non stop ads, and finally by 3:35 they went back to talk programming. Maybe years ago they were a great go to for news. Not anymore. Want news? Go to CityNews 680 for all news radio.

If Bell doesn't like being in the News business they really should just sell almost everything and just sit pretty in the Cell phone and internet business.
They've got something dangerously close to a monopoly there. There's only Bell Telus Rogers and Quebecor to choose from.
It would be nice if they could just sell the TV and radio stations.
Time to let it be someone else's problem...someone who can run TV and radio as a proper advertising business, not a Shareholder business, as Bell has done...remember, we are also talking about the same Bell that cried out that it should be 3 AM and 3 FM because to them it's the only way to make money...thankfully the CRTC shot that idea down.

Yeah, most people seem to agree that Bell is one of the worst companies in Canada. There isn’t a Bell “Let’s Talk” day that rolls around where people don’t complain about how badly Bell treats their employees. Radio and TV is a challenging business to be in, and Bell doesn’t seem interested in trying to find any solution.

W1440, CKJR Wetaskiwin AB is going from Oldies to Sports to fill the CFRN closure void. It's 40 miles south of Edmonton, so it will rimshot.

Sign of the times.
In fact, this debate reminds me a lot of climate change/global warming, except there are old-timers saying nothing is wrong, AM is fine, and the kids are still listening.

It's a 10kw, top of the dial AM station, 40 miles away from the city. Calling itself a 'rimshot' sounds optimistic.
At night, It's apparently directional mostly to the north and is in an area with some of North America's best conductivity. Daytime, non-directional, it is really quite near the urban areas of Edmonton.

will Corus is able to hold on the Oliers for CHED? I would be suprising if Stingray wants to make a bid while Bell is unable to do so until it's recent closure

Just a reminder about CanCon, or rules about Canadian content. It's only in effect for music on the radio, not spoken word programming. Maybe there should be rules about talk as well. But nobody thought about that when radio stations, even big AM powerhouses, were mostly music and the CanCon regulations were formed.

So if you're in Canada and own a radio station, you may run as much American comedy as you want, carry ESPN and talk shows like Coast to Coast AM that aren't about American politics. Maybe you wouldn't want to overdo it since you do come up for review every few years. As one commissioner once put it, "I should be able to know what country I'm in when I turn on the radio or television." But there are no percentage rules in place for spoken word content.

I believe of the two national Sports networks, one runs ESPN overnight and one runs CBS Sports. They don't have an all night Canadian sports show. Bell has several national talk shows for afternoons and evenings. And Rogers has an overnight and early morning all-news service.

If any format would work better on 1440 in Edmonton, it probably would be a sports format. CFRN got some ratings, and AFAIK, they still had some ratings when they were shut down. Where else would sports talk listeners go? Online perhaps? At least with the 1440 station they have a radio option.

So now, Stingray's Sports 1440 is broadcasting from West Edmonton mall, but do they have any actual sports to air?
I think a good sports station always has at least one sports team to carry on their station.

This includes all of Bell's stations in eastern BC...including CKOR Penticton, CJAT Trail, etc. and a lot in eastern/Atlantic Canada too.
