Beaumont's KZZB-990AM Fined $10,000.00 by FCC

According to Tom Taylor's "Taylor on radio-info" today --

Rev. Darrell Martin's KZZB-AM in Beaumont has been fined $ 10,000 for tower lighting problems.

The FCC says it received a complaint and sent an agent from the Houston office to inspect.

The agent reported that "the top and midpoint red obstruction lights and the ¾ side lights were not lit.”

Also the Federal Aviation Administration was not notified of the potential hazard according to the FCC.

The problems continue to pile up for Mr. Martin. KYOK has been silent for nearly a year now, KANI has had its fair share of problems over the years and now KZZB gets tagged for 10k for tower lights. Nothing an extra pass of the collection plate can't cure come Sunday morning, I suppose.

How Martin gets away with his 'operation' (and I"m using that term loosely) for KZZB is beyond me. I'm surprised the FCC didn't fine him for the operation, but I guess you don't fine someone for poor sound quality / low or no audio and dead carrier.... or do you?

who knows he may get another surprise visit by the FCC I was in Austin last week and his daytimer KFIT-AM was still broadcasting late into the night. I heard it on the air two nights in a row around 11 pm and I was told by someone who lives there that it happens that way every night how does he keep getting away with it?

That's nothing compared to KROB 1510 AM (Robstown/Corpus Christi). That is a 500 watt daytime only station and they've been broadcasting at 1000 watts 24 hours a day since 2002 and they have never been caught nor fined by the FCC.

Out of curiosity, how do you know the exact power of that station (KROB)? I would think they wouldn't tell anyone of their illegal power level, if they were smarter than a half-dumb baboon. LOL.

All one has to do is tune in every night to hear that KROB is on the air after sunset. As for the transmitters power output, well...Jerry's been through a few contract engineers over the past several years and a lot of them like to share info on the crazy stuff he does. lol

Martin may be bad, but no one is as bad as the legendary Jerry Russell!! He ran for a year an un-licensed 10kw am station on 1060. The FCC had revoked the license and to make matters worse when KOFY was licnesed it was a Class D with ZERO power at night! Russell thought it was ok to leave the transmitter on 24/7 and just turn off the programming. Yet the FCC never ever fined him and he ended up turning in the license due to health issues!
