Been toying around with the idea of an internet broadcast...

You know, all this talk about how WE would program things if we were the boss makes me want to start up a website streaming top radio-info posters. I think it is a fantastic idea and would like to start with the ones from this board as I think there's so little opportunity for you as Northern New England broadcasters (or former broadcasters) to be able to produce a show the way you see fit!

Just imagine hearing those you've been reading posts of in their natural state. I envision a group of seperate entities working together as a team to create a unique station that could be carried live or recorded and listened to by anyone who wants to.

I've already got 13 hours of mixes plus 2 already voicetracked. (Might tweak them a bit for localized sound.)

I've got leads on cheap liners, software to use to produce and stream. Whatever you'd like to do. You are the programmer. Set your own standards. Sell your own show.

Anybody wanna do it? 8)

interesting idea, what type of format would you center it around or would it vary by jock? could be interesting if you could get everyone united around the right idea..

nhradiochild...

Are you thinking about a music format? A talk format? Or a combination?

It's nice to be ALL THINGS TO ALL PEOPLE...but if 'past radio history' tells us anything, an OMNI-FORMATTED RADIO STATION is pretty difficult to pull off? ::)

The way I figure it, is that you can't build the Taj Mahal when you only have enough bricks to build a cute bungalow.

So I think it's akin to a military tactic: Dig in, camouflage, defend the position, continue to camouflage, dig in some more, camouflage more... you get the idea.

Simply put, it would start out as our own seperate broadcasts, but say bi-monthly we would have a round-table discussion on what works, what doesn't, what might need more time to fine-tune.

If you have the material for talk on your show, then your show can be talk. (Although I think it would be produced best in an MTV-style fashion, not necessarily live.) If you're heavy into the music foray, then that should be where you start. You want to lead with your best foot forward.

The point of this concept is to create a station where no one person is program director over the entire station, a democracy if you will. Then we'll just keep building onto it, until it either A) takes on a format unique to anything available and yet flows well, or B) grows so large that we break our offerings up into multiple streams that fit well (or are stereotypically formatted).

I think the key term is "difficult"... but not impossible. Plus, it's kind of like a taste-test. You might find something you never thought of, or collectively we could accomplish what standard broadcast hierarchy could not simply by fostering an environment where everyone plays a key role in making it better, not a dictatorship per se.

To compound this strategy, each co-op producer would invest equal amounts towards the start-up and operating costs of the station. Then, you can choose to sell advertisements on your program, someone else's program, a combination, or even TAP. Percentages would be worked out according to dayparting and so on, with 10% to be put back in the kitty to keep the station "on the air" or even to make improvements. And you as a co-op could continue to invest in the station should you choose to by donation. Should we meet our operating costs by sales, superb! If not, then we'll see how much isn't covered and split it evenly amongst each co-op producer.

On the legal side, while it is a co-operative strategy I would like to implement, I would also like a reward-type basis for marketability, so I'll have to ask questions from a legal expert regarding such matters, and perhaps research existing co-operatives.

I may just be talking to myself, or a very select group, but this thread will be my journal. Whenever I come up with an idea or thought about this station concept, I'll post it here for any feedback. :)

I wished to suggest that this station would take applications/demo tapes for timeslots and the co-op producers would gather around (in their landmark first meeting) to discuss what programs should be in what timeslots. Also covered in this meeting are what the "no-fly-zones" should be.

Additionally, this co-op would be open to "freshmen" as well, but the likelihood of them getting a prime time slot would not be as great.

I yi yi. Either this idea is taking off like a lead balloon, or people are too busy to pay any mind to it.

Well, not that it concerns the area at all, but for a small crowd, one of my mixes was played at a bar in downtown Korea just outside of post.

DJ said he was going to cut it, because an hour and 10 minutes was too long, but he never did. Folks were whistling, jammin out, even the barkeeps were diggin it. That was cool, however small the crowd. It warmed my heart to know that I could still entertain, albeit pre-recorded with no talkups.

Mixes? So are you a DJ (in the non-radio sense?) I'm interested in your ideas, and think you're on the right track, just surprised more people aren't replying.

Well, I've been a broadcaster in NH before, but am in the Army now. So when I'm bored or inspired or both lol, I spin off a mix depending on my mood.

Thanks for your interest.

NHRadioChild you are not alone. I'm thinking of doing the same thing. But in looking into fee's for stuff like BMI and or ASCAP it can get expensive. (Live365.com) Look into has many options as you can before plunging in. (I worked for a suck-ass station a few years ago and left on my own, because I couldn't stand to be told what to play, when to play it, what to say and how to say it. I KNOW how you feel, believe it.) Don't worry about pidgeon holing yourself into a format, just do your thing. I'd tell you my idea's, but then I'd have to CLEAR CHANNE-er, I mean kill you... (Kidding!) I'll touch base from time to time and see how you're doing. Good Luck and believe in yourself... If you don't, no one else will!
