BELT-TIGHTENS LIKE NOOSE AROUND NEWS AT ABC/PAMAL

???Sit down for this one! Another death blow to local radio broadcast journalism!

WROW newscasts are now being manned by Board Ops and salespeople! Upper management says "we can't spend another penny" and first to go is the news department. But after a bit of begging, it was decided NEWS will stay on 590 --- for the moment. As long as board ops and salespeople are willing to volunteer to read whenever Heidi or Tom aren't available. They're also thinking of tapping DJ's from JAMZ and Magic to "please sign up to do a few newscasts at WROW and help us out."

Don't bet on that Osama, Mary is a frightened little rabbit who wouldn't say "boo" if she was at gunpoint.

Sounds like another dubious bit of information surrounding ABC/Pamal.
Lets hear an aircheck of a salesperson doing a newscast if it indeed so..........

As you read along, keep in mind what the good Radio-Info people have placed in their disclaimer -
" In fact many of the views expressed here are just plain wrong. " I think they should add "Don't jump to conclusions - don't assume anything on this bulletin board is written by someone you work with or think you know. Or even someone you don't know."
And don't accuse anyone of being "so and so" - because I'm friends with some people who chime in here (and I can count myself) - we've all been accused of being someone (or something) we're not. Grow up! There's no need for name-calling or any other accusations. If you're a radio station manager or program director, you shouldn't be afraid of this forum!

We use screen names to protect ourselves and our employers. Otherwise many of us could not speak out at all. Having said that, how many people over the last five years in this market have been victims of witch hunts "Oh - Mr. X posts on that radio board as Whatevername!!" "aaaaaaaahhhh!'

Radio-Info set the rules and made this board what it is. It is up to them to make a change and require posters to use real names only. How many of you would still be here if that were the case? 3 or 4? Everybody else would be gone because the majority of posts would be huge "self and station" infomercials like the one about listening to the radio station on cable that was just recently posted.

ENJOY Radio-Info!
Read, have fun, go back and see what comes true and what doesn't.
I've seen acidic comments about business issues in the past do more good than harm. Why? Management notices. The sales departments and some of the air people read this board like it was the drudge report. It's the first and last thing they look at on their computers everyday. When things are written, they check up on them, and if there's a grain of truth they honestly try to fix the problem. I've been in on such brainstorming sessions.

Hey REPORTER! Where have YOU been lately?

Johnny_45. Thanks for asking on MY whereabouts. I'm here. I lurk, that's all really. YOU are the New Reporter. My days are passed. I have my own opinions and such. I lol at the posts here. I'd rather read about radio news and what this board is supposed to be about, not mambo jambo bull shi*.

I'll leave you with some of my thoughts on LOCAL radio...

Fly 92 Morning Rush - These guys are strong in ratings, personality, how they come off on the air. They truly are the perfect morning team. I do miss Ellen Rockwell on the air though, I wish her well elsewhere.

I got a chance to see The River Morning Team last night at Vapor. Minus Randi. Trey and Kevin. They were trying to interact with the crowd. crowd wasn't into it...Local groove, funk band Soul Session kicked ass! www.soulsession.com My overall opinion was ok..Too bland for me personally.

1023 Kiss FM - Are they still on the air??? DJ Thomas should do one of 2 things, go to Fly 92 (perfect in the afternoon's) or go to NYC!! She's waaaay too good for Kiss, as their ratings pummel.

B95 - Nothing negative to write, I enjoy B95. They've got the perfect team, Ric and Laura in the am, Lynn and her 70s and 80s lunchbox music and her Trivia, Chad...Oops, 1 negative - Deliliah?? Way to lovey dovey for me...No thanks...

WROW - Sherman will steer the ship right. News team needs a makeover. If he wants to compete with WGY, they need to be more local in their talk shows.

WGY - Too Republican for me, (I'm a Democrat), except for Al Rooney. Syndicate this guy! Very entertaining. my prediction, he will replace Don Weeks when Don retires. Then Jamie Roberts can do middays!! Perfect...Al in the am, Jaime following him.

Talk 1300. Vandenburgh will be a force to be reckon with...WATCH YOUR BACKS!!! :)

That's it!!

And now Ladies and Gentlemen...

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere's JOHNNY_45!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aw gee thanks, Reporter! Good to know you're still with us! You were my inspiration for jumping onto this board! Now here's my 2 cents:

I'll leave you with some of my thoughts on LOCAL radio...

Fly 92 Morning Rush - We agree 100%, but I think I miss Ellen more tha you do.

The River Morning Team . Blah!

1023 Kiss FM - Still on the air but I haven't heard DJ Thomas recently - did they switch her timeslot? Again, Reporter, I agree, DJT is waaaay too good for Kiss, as their ratings pummel. (don't you mean "pamal" - (inside joke))

B95 - again we agree, but here's where we don't:

WROW - Sherman needs a professional news director. WROW has been trying to be local, but if "Daybreak" continues on its current course, the "local" people of interest won't bother returning calls or agreeing to be guests. The most successful LOCAL radio shows in any market are the ones where the HOST is it. No relying on guests. Just taking calls and talking issues. (And remember, the CALLS are the LEAST IMPORTANT component- the HOST should be able to carry the show ON HIS OWN and if calls come in, that's icing on the cake. I think it might have been Ed Tyll who once said that)Sort of like a mini Michael Savage or earlier in his career Rush. It's local TALK that counts NOT local guests! (unless you happen to be Paul V - see below)

WGY - We agree!

Talk 1300. Vandenburgh IS a force to be reckoned with...WATCH YOUR BACKS!!! (And shut your doors, hide the babies and hang on to your people BE GOOD TO THEM or they'll be gone!)

Hey Johnny_45. Somebody that agrees with me...Hang on a sec.....Breaking News......Wait for it.........................................................................................................................................................................................

Hell just froze over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Johnny_45, the board is now yours!!! As I continue to lurk and ocassionally post...Great posts by the way..

Enjoy! Mazel Tov!

Things are about to get very bad inside. Johnny knows. The word is that everybody who even met mark williams there will be "deposed." I know that Johnny knows more or can find out more. The word "reward" applies here to anyone who can resolve this story to Williams' advantage so I am told.

You've got that right! I've never seen so much nail-biting going on here. We've also had an interesting visitor from a competitor stop by. And orders, orders, orders being emailed by some very paranoid upper-level people, to whom I say: "What comes around, goes around."

Just as a struggling WROW was beginning to find a niche and develop a listener core, Scotto and Mark Williams were gone. Then it was back to Square One. Now it's going to be back to Square Minus-One.

A company can mistreat and underpay staff members just so long. So many talented people have been shown the door over the last 2 years. Why? $$$$$! Dollars and NO SENSE - they just don't get it - the consultants are clueless empty suits when it comes to the unique Albany-Sch-Troy market. Every FM and AM here that has utilized "consultants" over the past twenty years has always encountered listener backlash, then rejection when they didn't appease listeners, then loss of ratings followed by loss of revenue. And they keep doing the same thing, over and over and over. Al Roney is doing remarkably well at WGY! He is a friend who paid his dues as PV's morning newsman at the old WROW. Had he stayed there, I'm certain his position (and radio career) would have stagnated. He'd probably have been thrown out too! Like my girl Dori Marlin who is leaving WTEN for a sweet gig at WRGB, "when the going gets tough, the tough get going."

STAY TUNED!

This will be interesting to watch from a safe distance....

Pomises made on behalf of and then renegged on by Jimmy Boy, money owed to and a double crossing of Williams (after he left) by Jimboy seem to be the driving factors. We are given to understand that the $$$ amount is insignifcant compared to the double crossing. (a for instance; Williams reportedly gave notice in July, promised to not walk until he was replaced. I understand that he was less than happy to pick up the TU and see that he had been "fired".) Ask the folks over at 'GY how well Mr. Williams accepts that kind of treatment.
