Benny Mardones, 'Into the Night' Singer-Songwriter, Dead at 73

As the article notes "Into The Night" was a hit a second time in 1989. What was the backstory behind a lot of older songs hitting in the late 80s, some of which had been earlier hits (UB40's "Red Red Wine") or had stiffed the first time out (Sheriff's "When I'm With You")?
I had a whole thread about that very subject matter a few years back, and I still add to it from time to time.

Such a great song. Checking the stats it hit number 11 in the summer of 1980 and number 20 in the re release in the summer of 1989. These were his only entries in the billboard top 40.
