Best AC in Greenville/Spartanburg: WSPA or WMYI?

Which is the best (in terms of presentation, music, personalities, overall sound) AC in Greenville/Spartanburg? Entercom's "Magic 98.9" WSPA or Clear Channel's "MY 102.5" WMYI?

For me, it's definately Magic these days. They seem to keep things fresh and interesting and play a wider variety. MY is just old. Same old songs. They have a few currents and just seem to play them over and over. The presentation lacks and is boring. Magic seems to be more on top of things and ahead, in community events, everything.
Magic seems to play more of a variety of newer songs.

What's your opinion?

For me, it used to be WMYI but lately they don't seem to sound as good as they used to. They voice track in the afternoons, and I agree there doesn't seem to be as much variety.

I don't know how others feel, but I'm liking how Magic has a quick recording that says the name of the song & artist after every song. It's just quick enough to be helpful but not get in the way.

I agree that WMYI has slipped in the past couple of years. The music doesn't flow as well. The weather seems much more canned and generic now. And, the voice tracking in afternoons makes it sound exactly the same every day.

However, looking at the ratings, it is clear that WSPA has done little to gain ground while WMYI has gotten worse. WSPA has had several down books in a row.

I'm really liking WMYI these days. Magic plays a lot of unfamiliar music which might be why they have the automated voice after each song. The announcements at the end of every song are really irritating especially when the announcer starts talking after it. It really makes the DJ sound disconnected when they don't announce the name of the song. that's even worse than voice tracking in my opinion. the public is the final judge though and lately WMYI is ahead.

I only like Magic on Saturday Nights with the 70`s. I do like Lee Alexander (vetern Oldies guy) though. My 102.5 is very good on the weekends. I don`t like the voice tracking. I like Eric Rogers as a d.j. However, he is better live. He voicetracks his My 102.5 shows. It is a sahme, because he can do a great live request show (like he did years ago at Oldies B 93.7). I would live to hear him LIVE on the Saturday Night 70`s request show. I would also like to hear more 60`s Oldies on My. They play alot of Motown, but haven`t heard mauch Beatles lately. By the way, it is hard to believe that My 102.5 is now 20 years old....

Like one poster said, Magic does play some unfamiliar songs that really need to go - but on the other hand, My has too tight of a playlist that hasn't changed for ages. Magic seems fresher and flows much better.

As for me, I like the song tags on Magic. It's sort of unique. I would agree that they may do that since there are some odd songs in the mix.

IMO, My needs to be more of a Gold-based AC (60s, 70s, and 80s with maybe ONE or dare I say MAYBE two current songs max an hour, expand the 60s and early-mid 70s out a bit) and Magic more the traditional AC. Maybe it wouldn't work, I don't know, but there are a few Clear Channel ACs that do that. It would add some variety.

Does WMYI REALLY voicetrack on Saturday afternoons? Pathetic.

Voice tracking especially on an AC station doesn't bother me. As long as the station is playing good music and the jock is not irritating, that's about all you need. With the advent of the internet, even a jock from out of town can sound local. Its true that some are better than others. Outside of mornings, I don't think the audience really cares. John Boy and Billy are voicetracked at least a couple of days per week even when they are not on vacation. They are only live on Mondays. By Wednesday they have finished the week. It's part of their deal and it hasn't seemed to hurt WROQ.

I don't know why but the guy on WMYI's afternoons sounds just really tracked. You can just tell. I'm sure he is good talent, but the guy doesn't fit the market or station, IMO. It's hard to describe.

102's 70s weekend was horrendous this past one. 50 straight hours of the same 75-100 songs. How much late 70s/ late 70s R&B/disco /Billy Joel/Elton John do we REALLY need? Magic was certainly refreshing over the weekend. WMYI needs to get a grip and change things around. The DJs are awful...they're either canned, stale, or just downright don't have the talent.
Probably the best thing on there now, as much as I dislike her program, is the Delilah After Dark show.

I flipped on WMYI for 70's Weekend this past weekend and heard Whitney Houston. That told me everything I needed to know.

If they are not tracked on WMYI, it surely sounds like it. The last time I was in the area and listened to them, it sounded like ost fo the other AC stations that Clear Channel owns and I prefer to listen to WSPA.

You left out that they are ugly and smell bad. ;D You are so obvious.

I beg your pardon....if I took your last statement correctly, read my back posts on this board. I have no connection with Entercom Greenville. I am simply stating the way I see things.

I know afternoons are tracked on WMYI, but I think mid-days (which aren't that good) are live as well as mornings. 7-12 of course is Delilah and overnights are automated.

It may be true that WMYI may be ahead in the ratings, but being better is usually a matter of preference and ratings don't always mean a thing too.
WCOS has been ahead of WWNU ever since they got started, but if you asked most people, they would rather listen to WWNU because it doesn't sound like the typical Clear Channel cookie cutter station.

I think that we agree that it is a matter of taste. i prefer wmyi. i am not sure what a clear channel cookie cutter radio station is but i guess you do.

never implied you were with Entercom. i think you protest too much.

I believe WSPA is the better of the two stations in the Upstate. I sometimes get WSPA in Charleston on a good skip day, and they have a large music mix, compared to Clear Channel.

They also have a good morning show on 98.9, which serves the community well, with teachers of the month, and lots of information in the morning.

Does My 102 sound like WXLY in Charleston? If it's that, with their 200 song playlist, boring personalities, and John Tesh at night, that is not a very good station. WXLY doesn't even have a local morning show, instead airing that Murphy, Sam and Jodi show from Baton Rouge.
