Best and Worse Local Radio Talk Show Host in Your Community

Not a lot to pick from here in Rochester. For a favorite, I'll go with that high school kid on WIRQ, the voice of Irondequoit High School. I think he has a show coming up on the school lunch line: Tater Tots vs. French Fries, a taste comparison.

Not a fan of the overrated Lonsberry at all...Joe Lomonaco makes the 5 o'clock hour entertaining. I also like Bob Smith on WXXI.

As for Buffalo I use to enjoy listening to Ron Dobson but that he's been replaced by the vile Hannity...

Best: The Shredd & Ragan Show

Worst: Tom Bauerle (Hands Down)

Best? Dobson and Shredd & Ragan.

Worst? The shrew on WBEN on the weekend. What's her name, Kathy from Williamsville? Woeful.

Have to agree with you on both, especially your "worst" selection.

Is the current base of newstalk listeners so brain-dead that this Kathy twit deserves even one second of airtime?

Hey, WBEN is just trying to get some "new blood" (i.e. cheap help) into the industry.

I am going to jump in here and somewhat defend Lonsberry. Yes, sometimes I want to jump into the radio and grab him by the neck, other times I find him very compassionate to the little guy -the opposite of his Republican ways. I can't listen to other right wingers. I always know what they are going to say before they say it. It's only a matter of how many half truths, distortions, and meanness they'll use on the air. Sometimes Lonsberry will be 180 degrees of what I expect him to say. That's what is known as entertainment and as far as programing is concerned, that is what it is all about.
Yes, he certainly comes off as a racist and a gun nut. He is very pro Republican, but at times I have heard him rip the G. O. P. a new one and actually praise a Democrat. You never hear a Rush, Hannity, or Nojay do that.

I say that we lock Bauerle & Lonsberry up together, and syndicate whoever comes out alive. At least there will only be one of them that we have to keep an eye on.

Beg to differ with your last sentence but I've heard Nojay credit Democrats. Case in point: Congressman Eric Massa for having the guts to hold public hearings on health care while Massa's buddy Louise Slaughter is afraid to hold such gatherings.

What separates Nojay from the other talkers is that he concentrates on issues impacting upstate NY residents versus what may be the flavor of the day in the mainstream media.

FWIW I did hear Lonsberry also praising Eric Massa for having the guts to hold public hearings. Lonsberry does have many faults but I do find that I can listen to him. On the other hand you couldn't pay me enough to listen and him and Wease go at it...

From somebody who often co-hosts with Bill Nojay - among Democrats I have personally heard him praise on-air:

Eric Massa, Hillary Clinton, JFK, Harry Truman, John McCain....

I don't live here anymore, but I listen to Jamestown, NY radio online. There's two talk show hosts there now: John Siggins and Nancy Bargar. Siggins is, in my opinion, not a good host when it comes to tackling the issues. Most of the time he doesn't tackle the tough issues unless prompted by a caller. And when he does, he's often misguided.

For example, the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities is pushing to build a new power plant that's going to cost over 500 million dollars. The majority of people who call Siggins' show are against construction of this new plant, which would in all likelihood bankrupt the city. However, he is in favor of this new plant because -- and he won't admit this on the air -- his wife is a BPU employee, and not building this plant would mean his family would lose its medical insurance.

Plus, Siggins uses way too many catchphrases (e.g. "there you go," "absolutely") and makes a lot of false assumptions.

All of these points might have something to do with why, industry-wise, this guy isn't even on the map.

Not exactly a coincidence.

From Toronto I submit for your listening pleasure, CFRB's (1010) John Moore (3-7pm) who sometimes is too smart for the room, but that's a good thing in my opinion. Highly entertaining, logical, left of centre without being a raving liberal, self-deprecating in the right spots, and a GREAT interviewer

IMO, CFRB also had the worst talk show host I've ever heard, Michael Coren, whothey thankfully fired (again) this past week.

Well, no matter what you think of Bob, I had seriously considered voting to let him on the air at the little station I worked at in Warsaw, NY when WHAM gave him the boot for his comments about the mayor in Rochester. The only thing stopping me at the time, was that we didn't have a delay.

While it was a nice gesture on your part, I doubt that your station would have been able to hire Lonsberry.
First of all, and this is from a few insiders I know at WHAM, Lonsberry was not fired but instead put on the back burner until the "monkey remark" controversy blew over. Why do you think instead of hiring someone local WHAM had a Clear Channel employee voice track his talk show from Albany? This guy was just a temporary fill-in.
Secondly, Lonsberry would have demanded a salary that I doubt your station could have afforded.

Yes, He continued working for C. C. on their station in Salt Lake City.
