Best/ Fav Radio Show in Rochester

What's your favorite radio show? What do you think has the best radio show? Just wondering. If I had to listen to the radio all day, it'd be Wease in the morning on the Fox, 1370 Connection in the afternoon, probably followed by most of NPR but checking out John Ditullio. On the weekends, the only show I really like to hear is Little Steven's Underground Garage.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the weekly student talk show on Irondequoit High's WIRQ is quite compelling. Due to their ultra weak signal, I sometimes park alone in the deserted Medley Center parking lot and listen. Last week's hot topic - The School Cafeteria: tater tots vs. fries, what do you prefer?

Thanks to shakes for the kind words about our efforts, and I'll second the motion on Brother Wease.

There's still enough good talent on the radio in Rochester, despite all the foolish corporate cutbacks that threaten our business' long term viability, that I don't want to single anyone out in either the current generation or those who've just recently retired or moved on (and perhaps, if we're lucky, might come back).

I will mention people who've been on the radio in the past who I miss (and a lot of us I'm sure miss as well);

Jack Slattery and George Haefner, who were Rochester's premier morning team for a generation

Eddie Meath, who was beloved as a radio personality and then proved that local morning TV talk could succeed before his untimely passing

Jack Palvino, Joe Deane, Nick Nickson, Larry White and Ferdinand J. Smith, who entertained us on BBF (and in Larry and Ferdie's case, later in the 70s on WAXC) as we were growing up and coming of age

We could mention more folks who appeared on Rochester TV and radio before moving on, like Anne Keefe (who really belongs to St. Louis, where she's a local legend), Doug 'Greaseman' Tracht (best known for his work in DC), or Foster Brooks (best known for what he did in Vegas and Hollywood).

Some of us also have memories of Buffalo, whose stations reach Rochester and whose personalities including Danny Neaverth, Jackson Armstrong, Joey Reynolds, Jeff Kaye, Jack Mindy, Stan Roberts, Stan Barron, Sandy Beach and more built followings in both towns.

Guess it's up to us who are in the business now or coming into it in the near future, to keep the torch lit. Hope we do....

I think I heard that topic on the Buzz, and they're number 1!

Bob, great show as always. It's so nice to hear a radio program that gives actual news and information. Most other shows make it about the hosts themselves and most of them are not too bright, or have pretty boring lives. I've listened to a lot of radio in Rochester and listened to the quality of programming fall in recent years. Besides a few bright spots, I thank god for internet radio and podcasts.

I'm not sure why Shakes has an ax to gring with Kimberly & Beck. I listen to them the majority of the time and switch back and forth from them to ESPN K&B have a great show. It's local and fun to listen to...no reason for the child-like "throw them under the bus" mentality....I think Shakes hates it that they are good and number one...listen to them. There is a reason they are number one and I for one vote them as my favorite show to listen to hands down in the morning

i think I'm on a different bus. I don't reference that anywhere in this thread. ???
That's all

It's very subtly referred to in the reply - the "about the hosts themselves" and "pretty boring lives" quips give it away.

star13 shows yet again that she's on Entercom's payroll ("not that there's anything wrong with that")

Hi no I do not work for Entercom. I do have a very close friend who does. What does it matter? I grew up a Wease listener but he is not the same...it's an unfunny show. I have listened to Kimberly & Beck for a couple of years and enjoy them....last I heard you don't have to work at Entercom to like their show.

An honest critique is not anywhere near the same as having an "ax to grind" or having a "child-like throw them under the bus' mentality." If I don't like the new Bruce Willis movie, that means I am childish and have an ax to grind with Bruce and obviously am jealous of his great success? I am also not a fan of modern day morning chat shows on radio(or on tv), but I don't have an ax to grind with anyone.

If I may get us back on topic...

I enjoy several specialty shows on various non commercial stations in the Rochester area. If I had to choose just one program, though, it would be the Fusion program that airs on Saturday nights on WGMC. While I enjoy all of the programs offered by this station, this show in particular is unique. In fact, I think it's safe to say that it is the only program on terrestrial radio devoted exclusively to this sub-genre of jazz music.

(I know some will probably argue that Fusion isn't jazz, but this is a radio board, so I'll just leave that debate for another time and place).

Wease hands down (Well what did you think I might say?). Its not even close. He and his new crew are really getting good and I am to the point that I think Jamie might be his best co-host yet, and I have been listening since 85'. The addition to Billy has been great also. There is a reason Wease is so well liked around the Country, he puts out great radio and will continue to do so.

"well liked around the Country"? ??? What country might this be? ::) That's fine that you're a Wease fan and we get that. Just wondering how the ratings look? ;)

I am going to jump aboard the Wease Train. His show is local, local, local & more local. What everybody on this board seems to want. In spite of himself, he is a very intelligent man. He has a quick wit and has a pretty good sense of an interview. The few times I have met him, he's been nothing less than rude -that biker attitude. But I do admire him for his sense of showmanship. I have worked hard in the radio biz for many years and certainly paid my dues-and Wease..... well, good for him, and I certainly wish him good health.

When I first get up in the morning I do turn on Beth & Chet on WHAM. Best place to get updated. Once I get my news fix I turn over to Wease. Also, as much as I hate to admit it, I do listen to Lonsbery occasionally. Once again, it's the local thing. Oh yeah, if I'm in my car at night, I like to listen to Bob Mathews, and again, he's local.

[/quote] Well liked with people in the buisness around the Country. Sorry I was not more clear. Oh, and by Country, I meant the United States.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm happy that you have a show that you get so much enjoyment out of. I don't listen to Wease but know many people who do and enjoy him a lot. :)

I like The Breakroom.
For my morning show.
Love Tommy
Like the Moran Family stories
Dan is ok.
local guests, Rachel Barnhardt, Berkeley Brean, updating their great reporting.
County Legislator Willie Lightfoot, lots of local talk...and they were actually picked up for a radio interview they did on MSNBC.
So good job! I hope they keep it up.

the breakroom interviewed that nut from alabama oh monday or tuesday morning on their show. rachel maddow then used part of that radio interview on her msnbc show. by the way i love tommy and i love wease and i love sally. i just wish they were doing one big radio show in rochester together. i know thats not gonna happen, so i prefer to listen to a combo of both of the sports radio stations in town. for music i prefer the drive or wber whichever music im in the mood for. and as for the crack on dan berello on cmf dude you really suck on the espn morning local updates, you job is to tell us the news not interject you own pesonal thoughts. if you were talented enough and smart enough you would have your own show in which to spew your thoughts. until that happens just gimme the scores and leave your opinions on the sidelines.
