Pandora! Do we never talk when our paths cross at 6am every saturday morning? Yeah all those people are right. Candy has been at ETSU for quite some time now, she's the radio station's "faculty advisor." We share a role model in that one, taught me everything I know plus Alan Austin. Candy even helped me get my foot in the door at Citadel. Before ETSU, she taught high school radio in Oak Ridge. jamesgang knows that! I'll spare the life story though. I was up at ETSU yesterday helping to train all their new programming people and told her she got a nice mention on here. I'll pass along your kind words too.

Sorta hard to talk as I am running out the door at 6am.... ;D
Thanks guys. I have been wondering that for sometime..
ya'll can be nice...but don't worry I won't tell.... ;)

Pandora,

I just figured out who you are. J Street gave it away.
You must be Misty Reed.
Honey, let me tell you.

You sound so SEXY!!!

Mr. D,
Um, sir, up 'til this moment I have found you to be a very intelligent man with insight beyond my mere 20 years in radio, but that last posting puts me in mind of one word.
That word would be "creepy".

I think I may need a shower.

hey now! i never used any real names! only the radio-info id names! i think it was pandora saying "thanks for the mention" that gave it away. anyway, i have no clue who pandora is! i mean, seriously!

So now since Scott O let Nicole go - - will HVB be looking to fill the slot?

another question
Could the time be near for the complete Murray Communications sellout since "The Hog" has lost listeners by the thousands?

Look at the BooK - Look at the BooK

I knew McKinney's resignation would cause K-Rock to finally fold.

Time for Widener to go also!!!

What's the price for Murray Communications?

It's evident Widener and his team are much too incompetent to run it.

Actually, I have to disagree with you on half of that last post. Widener's team is not incompetent (well, almost all of his team), that distinction has to go to Tightwad Squarepants himself (referring to David). I bet you a dollar to a doughnut that he came up with the idea to change the station to the Hog, not Scott or Winnie. From where I'm sitting, it looks like he admitted that Z-Rock beat them. And having worked there for a long time, it sucks to see it. K-Rock could have been fourth in the market had they stuck to the plan and not give up at the first sign of trouble. Why do I say that? Because a lot of the things that the Z does were first done by the K. I mean, they even picked up the morning show we ran from 1998 to 2001, for crying out loud. They have done contests that RZK did first, started a local music show, the Z-Rock Babe of the Month (K-Rock Calendar Girls). I could go on, but that gives you an idea of their strategy. Steal, steal, steal. But Widener tucked tail and ran from the fight. It was really frustrating to me to see them strutting around like they were God's gift to radio.

TWSP is correct!!! K-rock got complacent. And stealing is what we in radio do!!! The move they have made to the hog is not an unwise move, just poorly executed. Reasoning: If they can shave a point or two from QUT they will bump TFM into 2nd. Its a flanking move. Use a station thats not making money (since Z cut the numbers in half, national/regional got cut in half....and a bunch of the spots are obviously combo give-me's or just plain dollar a hollar stuff) and use it to boost your flagship a notch. But the flaw lies in the fact that they are not playing enough classic rock to even dent QUT's heritage, but enough to piss off the active rock format's younger schewing core. My Chemical Romance into Joe Walsh is a little extreme. And how bout that Warrant and Twisted Sister?! Irrelavant!!! WTF? Half assed poorly executed format flop. And no new job posting for mid days, by the way. And they took the ops manager job posting down.

Bored-Op,

You have some valid points there.

Yet in my opinion Widener is a very incompetent manager.

Why would anyone not fill a job posting?

Why would you post it anyway if you never had intentions to fill it?

Was he waiting for Bruce Clark to apply in order to boost TFM & the former K-Rock?

Or is Widener afraid to fill the PD psoition because 99% of the applicants would be more intelligent than himself?

Ah, maybe I hit a nerve Widener.

Goodbye Hog !!! Chicken is up and The Pork market is way down.
Thanks for selling out so cheap !!!

Evidently NOW Z-ROCK IS God's gift to radio - look at the new book!!!

Let me clarify, I was referring to Z Rock when I said I thought they believed they were God's gift to radio. Any time we were at the same event, they would walk out of their way to avoid us, give us nasty looks and what-not. I have never had that experience with any other station. When I was still at WRZK, if QUT, XBQ, Electric, Jammin...whoever (other than Z Rock) was at the same remote or event, they would talk to us and at least act friendly. We may have been competitors, but there was a feeling that we are in the same fraternity. I mean, this isn't warfare...it's just radio! Don't take yourselves too seriously!!!!

TWSP, I have been with a station at an event you were also attending with K-Rock a couple of years ago, and you seemed to be the one stand offish. I didn't take it personally. You should'nt either. I'm always nice to everyone, even competing station's employees.....but at events, I've got a job to do, like make sure the station I work for has prime banner placement, van parking, courting listeners and generally having a presence. I don't spend a ton of time chatting up "the competition". Nothing against them, but I'm usually really busy doing my job.....or at least trying to look like I am. I'm not a big fan of being in front of the public (hate stage work), but force myself to interact. I'd rather be in the studio. I'm the same way with the other stations in my own cluster. But behind the scenes, I'm pretty tight with the folks on all our stations.

As far as radio god's........not me, man. I'm just happy to be employed and doing the only job I know how to.

New stations generally come out with both guns blazing, and that usually means being aggressive on the air and at events. The new station has something to prove, so the employee's generally want to win really bad, and will do whatever it takes to crush thier competitor. The burden is always on the Johnny come lately station. It is absolutly nothing personal, its just bussiness.

After re reading tightwad's post about Z ripping off K.....I need to mention that anything K did was not groundbreaking and new.......Girlies, Local rock, and Bob and Tom are not new. Those are rock station staples. As far as the morning show, looks like to me, Z is benefiting from a major K-rock gaff for dropping it. And from what I've seen on this board and heard from former employees of HVBC, Bob and Tom was dropped to either save a buck OR because it was cutting into TFM's mornings. which ever, it appears to have been a horrible decision. Like dropping a name the company spent countless hours, many years and thousands of dollars branding, for a name like HOG. No offense TWSP. You sound like a decent guy. Hell, I'd probably enjoy a beer and radio talk with ya.

Back to best personality: How bout Reggie Neal on XBQ. Talk about a guy who IS mid days in the TRI!!

Bored-op, sorry if I came off that way. I am a little shy in public (why the heck did I get into radio then?) so please don't take it that I am stand-offish. I just know that there were several times I was at an a cosponsored event between K-Rock and Z-Rock and (I will let the two parties remain anonymous) and these two people shot me the nastiest look I had ever seen and this after I even tried to acknowledge them with a little head nod. So that's why I said that.
And I also didn't mean to imply that WRZK had the world's most innovative rock radio promotions...I know that they were used before in other markets. But there were just so many things (heck, Z-Rock even had a banana yellow van, which looked a whole lot like the old Rock 105.9 WRZK van) that Z-Rock used after WRZK did that it seemed like they were intentionally trying to confuse the audience. Z-Rock must have done something right, they won the war.
The reason that management dropped B&T in '01 was because the Arbitron numbers showed that the people who listened to them were a completely different audience than the ones who tuned in after 10am. And even though Tightwad Squarepants would never admit it, I think the fact Bob and Tom don't come cheaply also played a role in the decision. I mean, no offense to Mike Riddle and Winnie, but he could and can get away with paying them a whole lot less than Bob Kevoian and Tom Griswold along with the Chickster and Kristi Lee. I know firsthand how little he pays his morning show on WRZK, because I was the morning show for a whole three weeks in 2003. I sucked so he gave Winnie the job.
I agree with you BOP, though, it was a bad move to let Bob and Tom go. I remember the day after it happened answering the phone and checking the voicemail, I think I counted about 400 calls on the machine OR taking calls from people who were livid about the move.
And, yes, I will drink a beer with you, too! Just tell me when and where!
Peace,
TWSP

Tightwad,

I've read your post on this board for quiet some time.
You are a straight shooter and that's commendable in this business.
May your career in radio be very prosperous.
And if I cross paths with you - the beer is on me!

TWSP, Don't knock yourself for mornings......I did it for a couple/few years, and it is a damn pressure cooker. Heritage, signal and the Bible belt make for a tough row on the more aggressive formats. Much respect for anyone doing live mornings here, against all of the above and really good syndication. Its tough.

BTW, I too hate public appearances. LOATH them completely. I wonder how many other radio folks hate them. I don't mind dealing with people. Huge crowds, no problem. One on One, no problem. 15 people at once.....tough. And having to get up in front of 23 people to introduce a band.........that is the WORST. I've always tried to get on and off quick. The crowd ain't there to see me. Oh well, at least the bar is always open.....now about that beer...... Mr. d is buying? First round?

I am with you on remotes, Bored-Op. Loathe is a good word for how I feel about them, although now that I don't get them anymore cause part-time pukes like me don't get them, I miss that $100 bucks for three hours work! The two things I always hated more than anything about them are (1) car dealers who think they know more about how to do a radio remote break than you (I don't go to their car lot and try to sell a car!). They scream and get way too obnoxious, as they spew cliche after cliche about bad credit, zero down and the fact that anyone can get approved, even if they've had four repossessions and declared bankruptcy five times! Be honest...unless they are paying for the car in cash, you ain't going to approve them!!!!
And speaking of the guy who Lumpy Watkins Chevrolet, Ford, Chrysler, Dodge, Buick, Cadillac, Honda, Toyota, Mistubishi, Mazda, FIAT, Yugo and Used Car Wonderland says they can get approved for credit! (2) The guy who brings his wife and six kids to the remote to do his clothes and music shopping. And is at the car lot, wireless carrier, restaurant/bar, etc for the express purpose of getting a cheap t-shirt or other promotional item. Without further ado, here is the transcript of a typical encounter with the man/woman I like to call...(cue ominous music, please)..."THE GRISTLE GRABBER"!!!!
"Hey, buddy. You got a T-Shirt?"
I answer with a "yes."
After that he also asks, "You got five more of those? I need two kids small, an adult medium and a three-XL for my wife over there in the car. And, oh yeah, I want one of them haits you got in that box."
I tell him "no" but give him another t-shirt or hait to try to get him and the onion-scented body odor mixed with the 99 cent cigarette scent back to the trailer park.
But wait!!! He isn't done asking "Santa JT" for stuff. "Hey, you got any CD's in there? If you got Metallica or (fill in the blank metal band), that'd be good. My meemaw's birthday is tomorrow and I ain't done no shoppin'."
I try to explain, "I only get a few prizes and I gotta make them last for three hours, so I really can't give you anything more. Sorry, dude."
"Come on, man! I know you gotta bunch of s@#! in that van."
At this point, he plays the "I listen to the station ten hours a day" card. And I also know that he isn't going to go anywhere without something, so I do some scavenging in the van for some leftover little prize from the last remote, even if it is just some promotional single that Scott threw out of his office. Finding nothing, I give him a couple of bumper stickers and a K-Rock Girl Calendar.
"Oh...DUDE! That is awesome. Can I get about 35 of those calendars. Need some stocking stuffers for Christmas! While yeer at it, grab me about 30 more of those bumper stickers. I need something to hold that broke winder in my car together."
At this point, this dude has drawn every other "gristle-grabber" from a ten mile radius to the van, looking for free crap. Unfortunately, the next three people are some variation on this "listener". I say listener because he has a WXBQ, Z-Rock, WQUT, WTFM and Electric 99.3 and 94.9 bumper sticker on his once blue, now bondo coloured 1981 Chevrolet Chevette. And by the second break of a three hour remote, I have bumper stickers left to give away! Thanks a lot, goober!
This is why you never feed gristle-grabbers. They are like stray dogs...once you do, they'll never leave your porch!
And that's what I love about live remote broadcasts.

Peace.
TWSP

That is about as true a diatribe I have ever read!!!!

I always stuff a shirt or two under the seat for the legit station fans.

And that gives me an idea for a new thread...................

Yep - the beer is on me.

I'll tell you about when we used to play records and PSA's were on a flimsy vinyl like the promotional records your parents used to get out of potato chip canisters.

Remotes were across phone landlines.

If we recorded a caller to playback, it was on a reel to reel.

We logged every song we played when ASCAP, SEASAC and BMI were running numbers for royalities to pay.

Floyd Crammer actually stopped by the station one day, walked in and introduced himself.

The list goes on.
