Best sounding New Jersey radio station and morning show

"I've got something to say sir, and I'm gonna say it now" Phil Ochs

Don't hold back now...

Didn't realize G-Rock was the center of the NJ radio universe. There are radio stations in South and North Jersey too last I checked.

G-Rock is Press' invention. I'm talking about WHTG.

G-Rock is one hell of a radio station, and has one hell of a signal (on 106.5) for a Class A 50 miles away. its like a pumped up version of 104.5

I couldn't stand G 106.3 / G Rock for the first few years of its life cycle. When it was only on the 106.3 frequency, they were doing this Hot AC/Alternative hybrid sound that just didn't work, and kept on tinkering with it. While at times you would hear surprising Alternative titles, you would also hear the likes of John Mayer, Maroon 5, Michelle Branch, Vanessa Carlton, Avril Lavigne, Norah Jones, Dido, Train, Five For Fighting, Gavin DeGraw, Guns N' Roses, Bon Jovi, etc.

When Press turned G Rock into a two station simulcast (early 2005), they did see the error of their ways - to an extent. While they stopped playing the aforementioned acts, they still sounded like they couldn't make up their minds as to what kind of station they wanted to be. This was exemplified by the heavy airtime for acts like Nickelback and 3 Doors Down - pop/rock acts for soccer moms, regressive rock, forklift driver rock ... whatever you want to call it, it has no place on a true Alternative station, but until early 2006, it received pretty solid airtime on G Rock. They slept on several acts that they should have been playing (Arcade Fire wasn't played at all, and the likes of Bloc Party and Kings Of Leon were dropped after very limited airtime for some of their songs). In addition, they played only a limited selection of songs from many well-known artists - they only played the same 3 Depeche Mode songs, the same 3 Alice In Chains songs, only the most popular Nirvana songs from Nevermind and Unplugged, etc.

Right around April/May 2007, Terrie Carr was named PD of G Rock. While the station existed in a holding pattern for her first few months on the job (many songs kept on as Currents long after their run on the charts ended, i.e. Snow Patrol's "You're All I Have" and Pete Yorn's "For Us"), eventually we witnessed a very surprising evolution in G Rock's sound ... airtime for some acts notwithstanding (Seether, Puddle Of Mudd, Linkin Park), G Rock became exactly what a modern Alternative station should sound like. They started playing several acts that would be right at home on stations like Indie and FNX. They broadened the playlist by playing a much deeper selection of '80s and '90s tracks, and dipped into the back catalogs of many core artists. They started adding listener-intensive features (Retro Request Hour, 5 O'Clock Shuffle, Requestival, Radio Kaos) and genre-specific shows (Queens Of Noise, The Punkyard). And the newer acts that they're playing right now are pretty much spot-on (The Fashion, Switches, MGMT, and Rogue Wave among others).

G Rock has improved by leaps and bounds over the past year. I gave up on this station for a while and went back to it, and I'm glad I did. They have definitely won the battle against Radio 104.5 (which often resembles what G Rock used to sound like). Now, hopefully Press will actually stick with this sound rather than tinkering with it at the drop of a hat like they've done in the past.

Ok, I'll make this abundantly simple (and spot-on) with this angle:

Q: Where is the new Matt Pinfield in New Jersey radio-someone whose imprimatur would launch acts forward?

A: There ain't none!

Matt was the yardstick for indie radio back in the day. He knew the bands. He is someone you can stand next to and get an energy from, not some boring sycophant whose other career may or may not include film, modeling, or other non-related field.
Above all, he loved the music! The acts came to the studio and were rarely on the phone. He wasn't measuring what the other stations were doing, he set it!

The fact that what once was WHTG is now on two signal further degrades any cache those call letters once had, despite any improved signal. I would rather struggle through the static to listen to great music than to a playlist that has been sifted, diluted and spew'd upon so much it's irrelevant.

And by the way, G-Rock people-when you edit a song for language, don't just chop the frames out-like you did with Nine inch Nails' 'Wish'-cover it with another sound or reverse it. You ruined the timing of the song with that jump cut.
But who cares, right? It's only filler between badly produced commercials and dim chatter.

Still the best station around...wish NY had a G....sounds like sour grapes...seems like there are lots of "former employees" on these boards...not really radio geeks.

i wonder if G Rock or WCHR-FM show up on my areas ratings... probably not, but theres gotta be some place in the country where an out of area station is in the ratings.

Geeks are usually geeks for objects of quality. There is no real quality left in NJ.

Not in the last PPM. But you are correct in your assumption...and it's the Philly book! Three Shore stations show: WXKW, WPUR, and WSJO., also three New York stations: WCBS, WFAN, and WOR. Signal+good programming=Listeners.

And I would agree that WHTG-FM was a better station in it's FM106.3 incarnation. But that's gone now...and 'G Rock' finally sounds decent.

Thats Great! i definitly didnt expect and NYC stations they barely come in at all...unless you have a good antenna? this is awesome though that some Jersey Shore stations showed up in the ratings.

where could i look at these numbers?

WCHR and G deserve to be on there if Sojo is.... a few of my friends listen to WSJO its tolerable... that and 93.7 WSTW out of Wilmington (i actually prefer this over PST if im listening to that kind of music). i made a myspace group for 1057 a few months back groups.myspace.com/1057thehawk

im sure there are a few Hawk listeners in Levittown area, especially after 97.5 went off the air, im sure some went to 105.7 insead of 102.9

103.7 WNNJ I feel is a pretty good rock station all around. The Rock of New Jersey 105.5 WDHA idoes good as well. 102.3 WSUS plays more classic lite music than 106.7 Lite-FM does nowadays.

yea, sorry bout that, i fixed it :)

I did! ;)

You can see ratings right here on Radio-Info. At the top of the home page, click on the button marked 'ratings'. This will link you to them. Philly is monthly now, it seems, since PPM. To see the out of market stations, scroll down to the bottom...they are there.
