Big announcement on Dayton Sports Scene today on WING-AM

Saw this on the Facebook page of WING-AM.

ESPN 1410 WING-AM
Tune in to Dayton Sports Scene this afternoon for a BIG announcement

I wasn't sure if WHIO would get them or not. I'm not sure why this change was made. Compared to WONE and WHIO, WING's signal is not as good toward Cincinnati although with WLW's power, that may not matter.

Personally I have never understood why any Dayton station does the Reds when everyone can clearly hear WLW. I have never listened to any Dayton station for the Reds. It has always been WLW for me.

Okay, so they swapped the Dragons for the Reds. In the past the theory has been that if you lived in Dayton and wanted to just listen to the game you'd listen on the Dayton outlet. If you were a serious fan, you'd listen to WLW because you'd get more extensive pre and post game coverage plus the talk shows that cater to the Reds audience. I doubt that WING will do a lot with a Reds call in show on a regular basis. Bottom line is, if they can sell it right and make money off of the Reds it's a good thing. Signal wise, on night pattern WING has a cloverleaf shaped pattern with good lobes to the north, west and south, but a serious pullback on the east side, so they don't cover the Springfield/Clark County area well at night. That's where WONE had the advantage with their WIZE signal. Obviously that didn't boost their ratings a lot.

Back in the late 80s I believe WIZE would actually replay Reds games on tape delay. Not sure why they did this. This was back when they were a stand-alone operation.
WING and WONE basically swapped one low-rated franchise for another. Anyone that wants to see the Dragons goes to 5/3 Field to watch them play and the folks that don't go don't tune in to hear them on the radio, and anyone that wants to listen to a Reds game tunes into WLW. I never understood why a Dayton station would air the Reds to start with.
It would be interesting if WING slid their Sports format onto 101.5(If and when they EVER move from 101.7)...then probably all of Dayton would tune into the FM to listen to the games in crystal clear FM sound. I bet K-99 would be overjoyed if that happened, especially now that they'll most likely pick up old Rebel listeners starting next week.

I tend to believe the stations in Dayton that carried the Reds - WONE then WHIO and back to WONE - did so because a station in the city had always done so. If wasn't until 1969 tht WLW started originating the Reds. Even until the mid-1970's, the Reds were moved onto WKRC when a Bengals game was played. When that happened, listeners in the Dayton area probably to listen to a local affiliate.

WING is trying to be "The" sports station in the market. The probem they have is no one on East David Road who knows how to program and sell local sports. The sales staff sells the FM'S because they feel they serve their time and return on income better selling the FM's and not WING. Main Line only has WING becasue it was part of the cluster buy. Main Line has been offered expert help on how to make money on the station before and have showed no interest because it was not part of their focs in the market.

They can benefit from the Reds hook up if they do more on the programming side then put on the games. They can position programming outside of the games that will generate interest, build cume and bring in additional revenue.

If they plan on moving WKSW to East David Road soon and have it air the Reds and WING'S ESPN programming, they will need a stronger afternoon show then what they have now kick up their overall presentation iincluding liners, bumpers and local talent. Sports fans want a local outet other than just one choice of WONE's to talk sports.

WING can make some real noise with the Reds and airing H.S. sports only if they go outside the company and hire someone who really knows how to program and sell the station. Their program peope don't have the experience to do the right thing for the station.

I think that is why I am a little disappointed in WING. I like listening to Sportstalk 980 more than Dayton Sports Scene because it goes for 4 hours in the afternoon and they seem to talk about a lot of different topics. I think if WING were to try and compete more with WONE and their show they might do a better job. Why not do the show from 4-7 daily instead of just from 5 to 6? I also think it would be good if WING had online streaming like WONE now does. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

I agree that the afternoon show needs to be longer than one hour. On line streaming would be a real plus too for WING...

I also think they should some local week end programming too. I would love a scoreboard show after OSU games too.

What exactly has WING been offering in local (Dayton & Southwestern Ohio) sports coverage? Maybe someone could advise. You wonder if they would go with high school sports if they are going to be a Reds' affiliate since the prep sports usually take place on Friday & Saturday evenings and the Reds play many games at those times. I think streaming audio is quite helpful especially for those who might not to be able to to receive the station well over the air, but some things - like major league baseball - could not be provided via that service.

Nothing, sans the Dragons. They used to run Alter High School games but I think that was strictly a time-buy from the Alter boosters, and the booster group produced the broadcasts. Those broadcasts have since moved online, possibly due to cost or Dragons pre-emptions during the first few weeks of the season.

As far as other stations and local sports, WONE has had Wright State and Miami-Ohio college sports, and now has the Dragons. WHIO of course has UD. WONE also does GWOC conference high school football games in the fall and has aired some basketball on a non-conflict basis with WSU and Miami basketball. WSWO-LP airs Huber Heights Wayne High football/basketball/baseball/softball. The student station at Centerville covers their games and Kettering Fairmont's station is bringing back sports coverage.

There would be some conflict of WING airing prep football gaames for late August and September but they could still run the games on the web if they wanted to and pick up the schedule once the Reds season is over.

WING needs to have that local hook for high school sports when they don't have the Reds.
