"BIG" ANNOUNCEMENT ON WGY 6:30 AM TUESDAY 6/15

WGY has been promoting a big announcement for Tuesday 6/15 at 6:30 AM. I would suppose many would speculate a retirement announcement regarding Don Weeks who has been there 30 years come Dec. 1, 2010. Weeks who is 71 years of age has been out for health problems at different times over the last year or so. His wife has also had some more serious health issues. The only other thing if it is personnel related would be a new hire for news that is well known and has worked in the local media in the past.

If it is the retirement announcement of Mr. Weeks, I wish him very well. I met him once and he was very coridal. I just saw his promo spot. I tihnk he's done. He was already emotional.

I hope it's an announcement of Don Weeks retirement. I wish him well in retirement and have the best of health, but his show has been awful and old fashion for years.

I certainly hope they don't replace him with the unfunny Joe Gallagher, the worse radio personality I ever heard in my life.

Don Weeks...Quintisential Broadcaster...dedication and devotion to his audience, sponsors and employers. Don is one of the few of us who actually remember what it was like to record a commercial in one take, cue a record and backtime to a newscast. My personal memories are many, but one that stands out is the "Great Lawn Mower Race" @ 1400 Balltown road in 1987 with Joe G. I was in my car in Syracuse, and turned from monitoring other stations competative to me to WGY...it was a gas!!! Best of Health and Many Good Wishes. The Albany market will not see your likes again.

Retiring at the end of his contract term.

He's woken up my wife (who cried a wee bit this morning) for 30 years and me for most of that time, and my step-children throughout their childhood. Could he be corny at times? Sure. But there are so many pluses. The man can still do an interview that engages on almost any topic, for one thing. He's handled crisis and joy with total professionalism, and done so in a way that makes you feel like he's a part of the family. He's also the last link to WGY as a real, full service radio station rather than as a right-wing blowtorch. (I suspect we'll get a syndicated right-winger in the AM when Uncle Don leaves -- though even moderate-to-liberal-me would have to say that would be better than Joe Gallagher.)

Happy retirement, Mr. Weeks. It's been our great pleasure to have you in our homes.

I don't know what you some of guys consider funny. I respect Don Weeks as a local radio legend and a great person. But he hasn't made me laugh in years. He sounds like a forced Johnny Carson wannabee. Just not funny!! Joe Gallagher, on the other hand, always cracks me up. So call me cracked up if you like but I prefer Joe.
