Maine Binnie flipping WBYA/Islesboro to soft rock as "The Wave" on June 30

It makes sense in this tourist area of the Maine Coast to do something aimed at those upper income, mature listeners. There are Soft AC stations simulcasting in the Portland area and along the Maine Coast south of Portland, for the same reason.

I can remember in the 1980s and 90s when 93.1 WMGX in Portland was Soft Rock, calling itself Magic. Great music, low-key DJs. And I think they used wind chimes when giving their I.D. It went well with the relaxing Maine Coast vibe. It's Hot AC these days.

Yes, I can confirm they changed today June 30. "The 1055FM the Wave"
Puts in a good signal to Ellsworth and Mount Desert Island from their tower on U.S. Route 1 in Northport, 5 miles south of Belfast.
Decent music variety, not too hard, but quite similar to "Star 97.7" WNSX Winter Harbor.

That was the same philosophy when I was at 104.7 WQEZ in Kennebunkport under Mariner. Bob & Sheri in the morning, satellite-delivered Soft AC for the rest of the day. When Nassau took over they ditched Soft AC and went classic rock as The Bone (now at Binnie's 106.3 signal in Scarborough.)

Reminds me more of the "Greatest Hits Downeast" days of 93.7 The Wave WRMO Millbridge. WNSX leans more in to the rock music acts and is more upbeat.

WMGX was a Rock AC. A format I enjoyed but wouldn’t compare to this.

WRMO in Millbridge was an odd case. Estate sale. They had a more qualified operator ready to buy but for some reason backtracked on their verbal agreement and went with Begin, who was literally a guy with no radio experience besides running a part 15 and didn’t live there. He made decent money on the sale though but never seemed to make any connections in the business.

What might have been. Could have been the return and improvement of what WMDI managed to start before being absorbed into the Blueberry group.

I should have said in the 1970s. You're right that WMGX became Rock AC came in the 1980s. But when it signed on in the 1970s, WMGX was Soft Rock. Similar to the other "Magic" stations, WMGK Philadelphia, WMJC Detroit, WMJX Boston, WIOF Hartford, WMGQ New Brunswick NJ. They all ran a TM format called "Beautiful Rock." WMGX didn't subscribe to that but used those stations as a guide. Someone did it in-house. But it was Soft Rock, popular rock artists doing their softer songs but no Carpenters or Anne Murray.
