I was thinking about this after reading some of the comments about 105.5 the Vulcan and the state of Birmingham radio in general. Is there, or will there ever again, be an opportunity for a locally owned station/company to appear and be competitive in the Birmingham market? It seems like right now the only locally owned stations are 1000 watt AMs. The only big boy with a local identity seems to be WJOX. At least they're local all day and always talking about the things that matter to the average Birmingham sports fan. At the end of the day though, it's sports. Sports isn't a format that is going to ever top the ratings.
I used to work at 106-9 the Point and I can tell you for a fact that everyone in a power position in the sales department at Cox Radio is ready and willing to quash any sort of creativity. And maybe that's the problem with Birmingham radio - or radio in general. Sales has too much power over programming and promotions.
I have often said to friends familiar with the Birmingham market that the only way I'd return would be if either I had my own company. There are too many great format opportunities that the 4 C's are missing by shying away from local talent and marketing.
