BJ 105 in 1988 or XL 1067 in 2008? Pick your poison

RIght after their POWER INCREASE (I'm guessing here '81?)...you heard nothing but BJ-105 all up & down the beach in Daytona during Spring break.

Whatever happened to Keven Casey???????

I remember getting into an argument with a kid at Lake Highland about the hometown cowntdown when I was in grade school. This kid told me that Casey Kasem hosted the Hometown Countdown every now and then...I had to correct him and let him know that it was a local show...

HAHAHAHAHA!!!

Let me think...BJ with ME or XL now? Can I get back to you? (Actually, Y-106 with me & Jeff, Rick Stacey, and Jimmy Steal was a pretty solid line-up.)

Seriously, the love for that ol' BJ-105 stuff warms my rapidly aging heart.

And just a side note, Tracey Young & John Summers were two of the nicest co-workers I ever had the privilege of sharing a studio with.

Didn't Kevin Casey do a home town countdown on Friday afternoons in the late 80s. Seems like it got shutdown or renamed because someone else owned the "home town" phrase.
"Hometown Countdown" was really a syndicated package (believe it or not). It was produced so that local stations could make it appear as if it was a local show, but it was syndicated.

The bumps, wraps, interviews, jingles, drops as well as the playlist came in the package. Kevin would then add the "local color" by voicing the show (from a script that was provided) in our market. Exactly when it was stopped I'm not clear on, but I don't think it had anything to do with somebody else owning anything.

John may know more aabout this than I do. The last I heard - and this was about 4 years ago - was that Kevin's health had a taken a very bad turn for the worse.

Quick aside, when I got married in 1998, Kevin loaned me his wedding DJ equipment free of charge so that my UK friend Clive Hayward could come stateside and serve as DJ at my wedding reception (as Clive's equipment was incompatible with US electrical outlets). So Kevin was still in Orlando as of 1998.

whatever happened to Terry Foxx. Went on to Chicago at B96, then I heard Nashville?
Anyone, Bueller, anyone?
Terry went on to a very succesful career (and a helluva a nice guy, BTW). He worked for Scott Shannon in NY for awhile. I think he also was in Dallas for a stretch. We used to stay in touch, but I haven't heard from him in 5 or 6 years.

i remember hearing kevin casey on that am station in old town that played 70s music. the name of the station escapes me. Someone posted that kevin casey passed away.

Hey Bill, the Y-106 line-up of yourself, Jeff Cohen, Rick Stacy, Jim Steel, Jaime, and Bobby Sharp was 100& kick-ass..so was the BJ-105 line-up of yourself, Alan Spector, Tracy Young, Keven Casey, and Jon Summers.

You guys were great and I listened a hell of a lot...

Any top 40 radio station from the eighties is 100& better thatn any top 40 station of today...

i attended many sneak movie previews for free courtesy of that BJ-105 lineup in the mid to late 80s. If memory serves, bubba the love sponge came through XL in the 90s.

Also part of the Y-106 line-up...Shadow Stevens (Rod Grant) and Shay St. Claire.

Yes, Bubba was a brief part of XL. He was a real softie off the air. The market was just not ready for him the first time he was here.

i was covering a high school football game for the sentinel, late 80s i believe. Ran into Bubba at the Evans/Edgewater game they played in the afternoon that year because of encephilitis scare - he was doing a dance after the game. He was a very nice guy, very informed. I had not heard him on the air but listened the next night he was on. Nothing at all like his on-air persona.

now he is the biggest thing in tampa radio and has been for a while. who knew.

even though i am partial to WLOF - station i grew up with, bj 105 was the bomb in the late 70s through the 80s.

Bubba was on XL in the fall of 1990. I used to listen to him all of the time..He used to always play "Big Balls" from Ac/DC at 10 pm every night..

I also definately remember that damn encephelitis scare. I was playing drums in the Winter Park High School band at the time, and we had to march in the heat of the afternoon. Alot of my football player buddies were pissed also because they had to play in the afternnon..

Ok, I hate to be the guy who gives bad news, but... The fact that any of you even KNOW BJ105 means that your opinion of XL doesn't matter. If you listened to BJ105, then you SHOULD hate XL today. Why? Because you are OLD. CHR radio isn't for you anymore. Your day has past. Times have changed.

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't think XL is the best CHR (compared to other CHRs of TODAY). A better comparison would be CHRs around the state of Florida. Which is best? Y100? FLZ? WAPE? XL? Let's hear your opinion on that.

And I suppose you are a young, sprite Gen X/Y/Z know it all right? Yeah, I'm real old my your standards, 38 and yes I worked at those station in my mid/late 20's. Mr. MeanSpirit (nice handle too), for an old guy, you really missed MY points. I was comparing the imaging, jocks, execution, jingles, everything that still holds true to CHR's of today.

Yeah, I guess I'm so old I should just stick to listening to Tesh right?

Ok, if you want a fair and NEW comparision, sure there are 4 major markets in Florida. Miami, Tampa, Orblando, and Jax. Only Jax has 2 legit CHR's WAPE and WFKS. WAPE ruled the airwaves for years, then KISS FM finally starting beating them. Y-100 in Miami has enjoyed a rebuild and is certainly on a solid path. But, I still think the dominant CHR in Florida is 93.3 FLZ. Great jocks, superb imaging, good overall execution of the format and still a ratings player. XL is just boring, plain and simple. Very vanilla and almost Hot AC.

I know times have changed, the FM dial is simply full of crap and garbage, but this is still a viable format (CHR) when done well.

Just because you are older, doesn't mean you have to listen to Tesh. All I was saying was that XL isn't trying to appeal to you and your tastes, even IF you listened to CHR when you were growing up and enjoy the music now. How you target young people today is much different than how you targeted them back in the 80's and 90's. The days of cheesy announcer guys with crazy overproduced sweepers/promos and slogans that are nothing but hype are over. Young people don't buy it.

As for your new comparison, I agree with you. I think XL has gone too far and sounds like an ipod with commercials. I also think Kiss in Jacksonville has no personality. If you listen to either of them you won't hear anything exciting. Y100 and FLZ have both done a good job at cutting out all the cheesy over-hyped stuff while keeping an exciting and entertaining presentation. Speaking of, have you listened to FLZ this weekend? I've been listening to them online and they are doing an old school weekend which is really cool with their DJs mixing live.

Good points, well taken. Yeah, I'm checking out FLZ this weekend. Great idea, again, my only beef is why can't these CHR's widen the playlist and keep it fresh and creative.

Gotta go pop my Geritol...............see ya

Not really trying to argue. Just a final thought to your last post.

"my only beef is why can't these CHR's widen the playlist and keep it fresh and creative."

That is a statement that will always follow CHR radio. There are only so many true HITS at one time. And, there are only so many older songs that still have that mass appeal in order to stay on a CHR station's playlist. See, Top 40 radio isn't background noise like AC stations. The audience is young, moody and will turn the channel the SECOND they hear something they don't like. With AC stations, they can make a mistake every now and again and not have to pay the same penalty because they aren't used the same as a CHR. With every song change, there is audience turnover. The goal is to keep the maximum amount of audience. Playing a song that doesn't have mass-appeal status (a burned recurrent/gold or a bad new song) sends the dials flipping (or even worse, the radio off).

That thought was really just directed at your "widen the playlist" comment. As for the "fresh and creative" part, a CHR station (any station for that matter) should make that a priority and most don't.

Hey meanspirit, I really do not think that AGE has anything to do with it. XL 106.7 just plain sucks ass, along with 900% of any other CHR in the country. I mean, c'mon, you ever listen to XL?????, it just plain SUCKS!!!!..Back in 88', the jocks at BJ-105 knew what they were doing, and back then, CHR music was , well, MUSIC... Yea, some of it sucked at times, but at least it was MUSIC..

CHR radio now is just plain crap. All of the jocks look like they are stuck in the late 90's, you know with there Backstreet Boy hairdo, and they sound like 100& pure cheese....Don't even get me started on that Dick Clark wannabe Ryan Seacrest....And the so-called music....YIKES!!!!!!!

What kind of statement is "back in 88 the music was MUSIC?" That is one of the most ridiculous statements I've ever heard. If you will remember back in '88 there were old farts saying "You know, they just don't make music like they did back in '72 when I was growing up!"

Just for fun, let's look at the Top 20 songs of 1988:

1... FAITH, George Michael
2... NEED YOU TONIGHT, INXS
3... GOT MY MIND SET ON YOU, George Harrison
4... NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP, Rick Astley
5... SWEET CHILD O' MINE, Guns N' Roses
6... SO EMOTIONAL, Whitney Houston
7... HEAVEN IS A PLACE ON EARTH, Belinda Carlisle
8... COULD'VE BEEN, Tiffany
9... HANDS TO HEAVEN, Breathe
10.. ROLL WITH IT, Steve Winwood
11.. ONE MORE TRY, George Michael
12.. WISHING WELL, Terence Trent D'Arby
13.. ANYTHING FOR YOU, Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine
14.. THE FLAME, Cheap Trick
15.. GET OUTTA MY DREAMS, GET INTO MY CAR, Billy Ocean
16.. SEASONS CHANGE, Expose
17.. IS THIS LOVE, Whitesnake
18.. WILD, WILD WEST, The Escape Club
19.. POUR SOME SUGAR ON ME, Def Leppard
20.. I'LL ALWAYS LOVE YOU, Taylor Dayne

What isn't musical about Jordin Sparks, Leona Lewis, Chris Brown, Colbie Callait, Gavin DeGraw, Natasha Bedingfield, etc? Just because you might be too old for today's hit music, doesn't mean it isn't music. It just means you have gotten so old you are becoming your father!

DIZ Guy, I love ya man!!! Well said and I agree AGE has nothing to do with it. Today's youth don't understand hard work, paying dues, and what it was like to grow up in a respected, competitive workplace. Now its all about how many digital cameras and silly iPods they own. Its the instant gratification generation and they think "we, the old guys" don't get it.............shame, I weep for the future............

I'll take the top 20 from 1988 over the crap we got today. And yes, I agree the top 20 from 1978 may have been better and so on.....

Older is better, respect your elders, don't criticize them. You can't compare your instant gratification, violent, greedy generation to those who saw a nation peak in the 70's and 80's.

Let's face it, America's best days and radio industry are far behind us.............

Again, I weep for the future.....................
