Bloomberg cancels local ‘Baystate Business’ radio show, lays off hosts

Bloomberg has pulled the plug on “Baystate Business,” its only locally produced radio program, and laid off hosts including Kim Carrigan, Tom Moroney, and Joe Shortsleeve.

The show — which aired from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on 106.1 FM Boston/Newburyport 1330 AM Waltham and 92.9 HD2, and was also available as a podcast — was replaced starting Monday by “Bloomberg Businessweek,” which broadcasts across the company’s radio network.

Also laid off in Boston were on-air staffers Anne Mostue and Janet Wu, and executive producer Peter Lagace.

There are two different Janet Wu's on Boston media. This is NOT the one who retired from WCVB Boston back in November of last year.

As far as I know, all the other Bloomberg stations, WBBR 1130 NYC, WDCH 99.5 Washington and KNEW 910 San Francisco, mostly run the same programming. They have occasional breaks for local news, sports and weather. Until January 1 of this year, they also broke four times per hour for traffic, but that's been discontinued. Apparently Total Traffic/iHeart raised the price for the service and Bloomberg said no.

I didn't know that the two Boston stations, WNBP 1450/106.1 Newburyport and WRCA 1330/106.1 Watertown, had a three-hour afternoon show. I'm sad when anyone loses a gig. But I'm surprised it existed at all.

If other people were laid off, not just the three hosts of the show, that makes me wonder if anyone is doing local news for Boston? I know on weekends, the newscasters in New York record the Boston updates too. Maybe that's what's happening on weekdays as well?

But I'm surprised it existed at all.

I think 'Baloney' Moroney had a gig for a long time. Maybe it was off and on but i'd say it had to be close to 20 years?

The Bloomberg studios are in Central Sq Cambridge.

Bloomberg has leased WRCA from Beasley since 2017 when the 106.1 translator went online.

The latest book showed a cume of 5,900

Interestingly, the amendment to the LMA posted to the WRCA public file last June only extended the LMA until last September. It had been contractually set to expire on 6/26/2022 and that extended it to 9/26.

I'll be looking further into this...

It was a pretty well done show with good local talent. Sorry to see it go.

Kim Carrigan and Joe Shortsleeve were big names in Boston TV news once. Would the Bloomberg Radio gig pay enough to be a full-time job for someone like that? Are they semi-retired? Or were they with Bloomberg just to maintain a media presence (and get a paycheck) while hoping to return to the Boston media big leagues?

Maybe Kim Carrigan and Joe Shortsleeve were hired because they were "names" familiar to many Bostonians.

Given the depth of the layoffs, I suspect Bloomberg is closing it's Boston bureau.

One thought: Bloomberg has the TV and radio rights to the upcoming Boston Pops July 4th concert and fireworks show (the radio broadcast is on Bloomberg owned or affiliated radio stations including WRCA-1330/106.1; the TV broadcast is seen nationally on Bloomberg Television and simulcast in Boston on WHDH-7). With Carrigan, Shortsleeve, Tom Maroney, Janet Wu, and Anne Mostue all axed, I suspect two someones from Bloomberg's New York headquarters will come north to Boston to host the concert broadcasts, one to host on TV and the other for radio.

But given that WHDH will simulcast the concert with Bloomberg Television, could WHDH anchors Kim Khazei and Adam Williams host the TV coverage?

I don't think Kim is hurting for money with her multi million dollar house on the North Shore and her husband is a lawyer for a "boutique investment firm", plus she is pushing 60+ so her days on camera are pretty much behind her.

Shortsleeve has to be 65 if not 66, chances are this was his last media gig

I listened. Sometimes it was fluffy but many times it was informative. Well done all around. Thats too bad.
